Academic Development

UNIMAS like is fully committed to ensure that all staff have the relevant knowledge, skills and expertise to perform their work to consistently high standards and to achieve their full potential.  We recognise that the training and development of our staff is fundamental to the improvement of our operational performance and the achievement of our strategy and goals. UNIMAS will therefore strive to make training and development an integral part of our operations and to follow a continuous process of appraisal, training and development through the activities of Academic Development Unit (ACD).

Training Scope

This training and development process applies to all academic staff of UNIMAS irrespective of their employment status, function, grade or location. All staff is treated equally in the provision of training and development opportunities and are provided with equal access to training and development opportunities relevant to their needs.

Budgetary Control

The UNIMAS Training Committee will determine the annual budget and formulate a strategy for the deployment of available resources. The UNIMAS Training Committee is chair by the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic and International (A&A). All Faculty Deans, and Dean of the Center for Language Study and Dean of CALM are members in the committee.

Academic Development Programs

ADU coordinates CALM’s courses focusingon teaching and learning. In addition, ADU collaborates with the Research and Innovation Management Center (RIMC), Publication Division (PD), Strategic Planning and Quality Management Center (SPQMC), and Curriculum Development and Management Division (CDMD) to offer courses on research, publication, quality assurance, and curriculum development

External Training

ADU is responsible for coordinating applications from academic staff to attend external courses by the lecturers.  Starting from 2014, CALM will provide financial support for attending approved courses outside UNIMAS covering course fees, accommodation and travel. Academic staff has to produce written report after completing the course and sharing their knowledge and skills with academic members in the university.

Other training

In addition, CALM also sends participants to the  ACELLT Leadership Development Series in Higher Education Learning & Teaching Programs. This program is conducted by Higher Education Leadership Academic (AKEPT). These training programs aim to improve which is the quality of teaching and learning among academic staff in higher education institutions.

Postgraduate Diploma in T&L

Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), like all other public institutions of higher learning in Malaysia, has an array of short courses designed as part of its staff development program. As part of UNIMAS's aspiration to be contemporary and forward looking, we put extra emphasis on ensuring quality university education by incorporating new approaches and utilizing state-of- the-art technologies in teaching and learning. This is in line with the requirements for all public universities in Malaysia to install quality assurance mechanisms iwithn their academic programmes.

One of the proactive steps taken by UNIMAS is to offer a Post-Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning (PGDip) programme - an internal staff development programme specifically designed for its newly hired academics and junior lecturers who have just returned from their graduate studies. The programme is designed as a professional development initiative to continuously retool and reskill young academics with knowledge and skills about Teaching at Higher Education, especially in the area of pedagogy and instructional technology.

In addition to the Post-Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning, CALM also conducts various professional development programmes for UNIMAS academics. The Academic Development Unit is also tasked to coordinate short courses for academic staff, within and beyond campus, as a strategy to ensure all staff members have an opportunity to develop their competence and skills in teaching at the university within their fields of specialisation.

The objectives of the PGDip program are:

1. to train UNIMAS academics in teaching and learning on a systematic and formal basis to enhance their personal competence as university educators;

2. to establish a long term commitment toward teaching and learning that is consistent with UNIMAS teaching and learning policies; and

3. to develop a culture of collaborative academic community that places special commitment to excellence in teaching and learning.


The PGDip programme comprises of eight courses, all of which amounting to 32 credits. The curriculum is a combination of coursework and practicum. The courses in this programme are:

1. Teaching and Learning at Higher Education

2. Curriculum and Instructional Design

3. Principles of Teaching and Learning

4. Management of Teaching and Learning

5. Student-Centred Learning

6. Assessment of Learning

7. Technology for Teaching and Learning

8. Teaching Practice


A Programme Management Committee (PMC) is established to plan and monitor the academic curriculum, course delivery and quality assurance of the program. The PMC is chaired by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), and its members consist of the management team at the Centre for Applied Learning and Multimedia and selected professors and senior lecturers from all faculties. To ensure effective delivery of the program, highly qualified and experienced teaching staff are sourced from within and outside UNIMAS.

The programme adheres strictly to and meets all the requirements of the UNIMAS Postgraduate Study Rules and Regulations in which quality assurance elements are intrinsically instituted.

To date, UNIMAS is the only public institution of higher learning in Malaysia to offer such certification for academic staff, specifically to develop their competence and skills to teach as university educators.


Appreciating the UNIMAS Vision & Mission

The UNIMAS Vision & Mission Workshop is conducted yearly for newly hired academics as a strategy to facilitate their understanding about the university's aspirations, directions and responsibilities. Sessions are conducted by the top management team of the university, and it opens valuable opportunities to directly interact with decision makers and leaders of the university. The workshop has been conducted annually since the year UNIMAS was established, making it one of the university's essential events that should not be missed by any UNIMAS academics.

Off-Campus Training

CALM is also coordinating applications for outside training programs for academic staff. If you wish to participate in training programs related to your academic development, please download calm's training form.

Important reminders:

Applicant must be a permanent staff.

Application should be submitted at least THREE (3) weeks before the date of the event. It must be attach with training brochure.

Delay in submission of application and the necessary documents will necessitate applicant to make advance fees payment.

Only a complete application form with Faculty’s Dean Approval will be processed.

Funding for outside training programs is including fees, accommodation, travel expenses and daily allowance.

Applicant should arrange his/her own travel arrangement and advance payment. The mode of travel considered reasonable is that which provides adequate standards of comfort, convenience, safety and efficiency, and is the most economical option under the circumstances.

Please take note : CALM does not support any Conference fees.

Upon Returning from training:

Applicant is required to conduct a knowledge sharing session either at faculty/department/program level within a month. CALM should be NOTIFIED on the date of the session.

After the knowledge sharing session, a Training Report together with the attendance list of the knowledge sharing session should be SUBMITTED to CALM.

CLAIMS will only be processed after completing requirement above. For reimbursement purpose, applicants should fill in the online claims forms (e-claims) using faculty account and print the form to be submitted to CALM’s office. Please attached together your approval letter, training report, related receipts, boarding pass and other supported document which necessary.

All expense claims should be submitted for reimbursement on a timely basis, and it would be unreasonable to expect reimbursement after more than one year after the related expenses have been incurred. Please refer to CALM Training Guideline.
