INSTITUTE OF BIODIVERSITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION (IBEC)

The Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation was set up in July 1994 as one of the founding institutions within UNIMAS with the purpose of promoting research in two niche areas-tropical biodiversity and environmental conservation. Its teaching and research programmes are structured at the masters,doctoral and postdoctoral levels.

INSTITUTE OF EAST ASIAN STUDIES (IEAS)

Institute of East Asian Studies (IEAS) was established on the 1st of March 1997. The establishment of the Institute of East Asian Studies (IEAS) is to promote better understanding of current and projected future socio-economic change impacting Borneo in the regional and global context. The role of the institute is to promote research in all relevant areas to ensure deeper and holistic understanding of the socio-political dynamics of the East Asian region in the global context by taking into account the social, cultural, religious, historical, and civilizational aspects. The focus of research at IEAS is the island of Borneo and Malaysia in the context of South-east Asia and East Asia – a region undergoing drastic transformation as a consequence of unprecedented economic development and globalization.

INSTITUTE OF HEALTH AND COMMUNITY MEDCINE (IHCM)

The Institute of Health and Community Medicine (IHCM) was founded in 1995 with the goal of studying diseases important in the region. Today, we've come a long way towards achieving our goals, with state-of- the-art lab facilities, ranging from modern cell and tissue culture, genetic engineering to multi-pathogen diagnostics, all of which allow us to pursue multiple areas of research. Since the beginning, we have been dedicated to investigating the causes and diagnosis of viral diseases affecting our community and throughout the years, we have created and continue to strengthen links within our community and have contributed greatly to health issues relevant to the people of Sarawak.

INSTITUTE OF DESIGN AND INNOVATION (InDI)

The Institute of Design & Innovation (InDI) was initally known as the Institute of Design and Ergonomic Application (IDEA) which was incorporated back in October 1996. In keeping with the thrust of the university of being at the forefront of innovation, it was decided that IDEA would take on a bigger role and thus was renamed as the Institute of Design & Innovation (InDI) on 1st March 2011. InDI took a major step forward in providing  a platform for multidiciplinary experts from the University for a High Quality Research in design and innovation thus transforming all creative ideas into innovative products with highly marketable quality and commercialization.

INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL INFORMATICS AND TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS (ISITI)

In December 2010, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak approved the formation of the Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovation (ISITI). The Centre of Excellence for Rural Informatics (CoERI) which was previously anchored at the Faculty of Computer Science and IT, is now anchored at ISITI. In 1999 UNIMAS launched eBario project in remote community of Bario, Sarawak. By applying a people-centered/ participatory approach, the project aims to deploy the Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), empower and train the Bario community to apply ICTs in improving their livelihood. After the successful experiment of eBario the institute developed expertise in many niche areas including but not limited to Rural Informatics, Green Technologies, ICTD and ICT4D. One of the most important impacts of the eBario and eBario replication projects has been providing the basis for the creation of ISITI-CoERI at UNIMAS.
