PhD by Research

Doctor of Philosophy Degree

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree is a research degree by thesis under the supervision of an experienced member of academic staff. The normal duration for full-time study is 3 years with a possibility of extension to a maximum of 6 years; and from 4 to 8 years for part-time study.

The academic progress of a research student is evaluated twice a year through progress reports. Final assessment is through thesis and a viva voce examination.

A student who has satisfied the Examination Committee for Postgraduate Studies in all aspects of their work is eligible for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.


For those applying to pursue a Masters degree, the minimum requirement is a first degree with a CGPA of 3.0. Students applying should have a good command in English, while foreign students must have a minimum IELTS of 5.5 or its equivalent.

Application of Study

Application can be made online at Centre of Graduate Studies (CGS). and prospective students should also mail copies of supporting documents to CGS. CGS will submit your application to the faculty and based on our decision, CGS will inform you on the outcome of your application.

Applications for postgraduate programmes (via research) can be made anytime and shall be processed as and when received. Admissions are in July, December and May each year. Applications for postgraduate programmes (via coursework) have to be received by 15 June each year.

Admission for postgraduate programmes (via coursework) occurs once a year in July only. An offer letter will be issued by CGS to all successful prospective candidates advising them of their date of registration and the amount of fees to be paid.Detail procedures for processing a postgraduate application is shown here: Postgraduate Applications Flowchart.

Once registered, immigration regulations in Sarawak require all non-Sarawakian and international postgraduate students to apply for a Student Pass to enable them to remain in the state as students and so use the facilities provided for them in this campus. Student Pass Flowchart.

Accommodation and Transport

Upon request, postgraduate students may be accommodated at the Postgraduate Students Hall in the campus. Apart from this, there are numerous rooms and houses for rent within walking distance from the university. A daily and scheduled bus service is available inside the campus, and there are reliable public transport services into the campus from outside the university.
