Master of Arts by Research (MA11)

The academic progress of a research student is evaluated twice a year through progress reports. The degree is examined through the presentation of a thesis and a viva voce examination. A student who has satisfied the Examination Committee for Postgraduate Studies in all aspects of their work is eligible for the award of the Master degree.

Requirement for Master of Arts
A Bachelor degree of high quality with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 from any recognised local/foreign university and approved by the Senate of the University. (Applicants with a CGPA of less than 3.0 but with outstanding relevant working experience may also apply).

Duration of Study for Master of Arts
The normal duration of study for a Master's degree (by research) is two (2) years full-time or four (4) years part-time.

English Proficiency
For international students, a minimum IELTS Score of 6.0 or its equivalent (eg.TOEFL-525; TOEFL Computer Test -196; TOEFL Internet Test 69-70) is required.

5. To apply, the following steps should be adhered to. Please take note that incomplete applications will not be processed.
    a) Complete the application form and please ensure that all the required fields have been filled up.
    b) Submit certified copies of the following documents:-

  • Examination transcripts and certificate of degree(s);
  • A research proposal (for PhD and Master’s by research only);
  • IELTS/TOEFL score results (minimum 6.0) for International students only(see here for our English requirement);
  • A short resume/curriculum vitae;
  • Proof of financial capability;
  • Postal Order or Bank Draft of RM15 for Application Processing Fee for Malaysian applicants ONLY.

All applications must show proof of financial capability to cover all fees and living costs throughout the full duration of your studies may be in the form of letter of financial guarantee from your sponsor, proof of scholarship, or a certified copy of your personal bank statement.

Upon receipt of your application, the Centre for Graduate Studies will forward your application to the relevant faculty who will then scrutinize your application. The faculty will decide on your application and should your application be approved, the faculty will assign a suitable supervisor or panel of supervisors. Your application whether approved or otherwise will then be forwarded back to the Centre for Graduate Studies who will officially inform you of the outcome of your application.
