Biodata

Dr. Alvin Yeo Wee earned his PhD and Bachelor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences (Hons) from the Computer Science Department, University of Waikato, New Zealand. He joined the Faculty of Computer Science and Information (FCSIT), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) in 1994, and currently is a Professor at FCSIT. He is also the founding Director of the Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovations (ISITI) since 2011.

Teaching & Supervision
He has taught over 40 undergraduate courses at FCSIT.  Since 2008, fifteen undergraduate final year projects (FYPs), 12 Master and 7 PhD students have come under his supervision. Of these FYPs’ students, all 15 have completed. Five Masters (by Research), one MAIT (by coursework) and two PhD students have graduated. Alvin has also examined PhD and Master theses from University of Melbourne, Australia; University of Cape Town, South Africa; University of Waikato, New Zealand; Swinburne University of Technology, Australia; as well as Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, and UiTM (Shah Alam, Malaysia).

Research

Alvin has expertise in the area of Information Systems, specifically in Information and Communications Technology for Development (ICT4D) and human computer interaction (HCI). Overall he has co-authored over 130 papers in the area of ICT4D and HCI. Of these papers, 27 are in indexed journals and conferences. Since 2008, he has published 94 papers (15 indexed) and he currently has a Google-Scholar H-index of 10.
From 2008, Alvin has been involved in 30 projects bringing in funding of RM 11.8 million to UNIMAS.  These projects include 11 international projects, 10 national projects and 4 consultancy projects; of which he is heading/has headed 8 projects.  The projects range from ICT4D projects, using ICTs to preserve and maintain indigenous languages, rural sustainability projects as well as projects involving technological innovations. Since 2008, his projects have received 5 international awards, 5 national awards, and 7 University awards.
Alvin has reviewed papers in over 30 conferences and journals, of which 17 are indexed. He has also reviewed ICT4D research proposals from National Science Foundation in South Africa. Alvin has co-organised conferences such as the eBario Knowledge Fair, as well as the 10th International Workshop on Internationalisation of Products and Systems (IWIPS’11), the first time it was held outside Europe and North America.  He is an editor of 6 conference proceedings, and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Community Informatics.
Alvin is recognised for his ICT4D expertise. He was recently involved in the review of the National Strategic Framework on Bridging the Digital Divide conducted by the Economic Planning Unit (EPU), Prime Minister’s Office, Malaysia.  Alvin has been an invited speaker for events organized by EPU and International Telecommunication Union-Centre of Excellence Universiti Utara Malaysia, as well as in international conferences.

Consultation

Of the 6 consultation projects he has been involved in, three of these projects involve industry. With ISITI, Alvin has been actively collaborating with ISITI’s technology partner, MAXIS. The collaboration has resulted in consultation, contract research projects, software application deployment as well as telecentre management in Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission/MAXIS’s 20 community broadband centres in Malaysia.


Management/Contribution
Alvin is a pioneer staff at FCSIT since 1994. In addition to appointments as Programme Head and Deputy Dean (Postgraduate and Research), he was also the Director of the Centre of Excellence for Rural Informatics from 2008 and was the founding Director of ISITI in 2011. He serves on University Senate, various University committees, such as the ICT Expert Panel, has received the UNIMAS Staff Excellent Service Award and numerous University accolades.  At the national level, he is Chair of the Standing Committee for Science and Technology in the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Malaysia, and was a Member of Expert Review Panel for the Sub-sector of ICT for “National Brain Gain Programme”, appointed by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia. He was also the Past zChair for the Sarawak Chapter of the Malaysia Software Testing Hub (2011-2014).

Current Research Activities

Alvin has expertise in the area of Information Systems, specifically in Information and Communications Technology for Rural Development (ICT4RD) and human computer interaction (HCI). Overall he has co-authored 87 papers in the area of ICT4RD and HCI. Of these papers, 19 are in indexed journals and conferences. He currently has a Google-Scholar H-index of 8 (since 2008).

From 2008, Alvin has been involved in 27 projects bringing in funding of RM 10 million (USD 3.3 mil) to UNIMAS. 

These projects comprise 7 international and 20 national projects, of which he is heading/has headed 8 projects.  The projects range from ICT4RD projects, using ICTs to preserve and maintain indigenous languages, rural sustainability projects as well as projects involving technological innovations. His projects have received 1 international (Gold at British Invention Show), 2 national (APICTA Award and ITEX), and numerous University awards (3 Golds, 5 Silvers, and 4 Bronzes).

Alvin has reviewed papers in over 30 conferences and journals, of which 17 are indexed. He has also reviewed ICT4RD research proposals from National Science Foundation in South Africa.
