Launching Ceremony of Guidelines for the Design of Low Volume Rural Roads (LVRR), produced by JKR Sarawak Research Centre in collaboration with UNIMAS.

Prof Mannan, Dr Charles Bong & Dr Delsye attended the launching ceremony of the Guidelines for the Design of Low Volume Rural Roads (LVRR), while Dr Mohamad Raduan & Prof Madya Ir Dr Siti Noor Linda absent due to other appointments.

All of them were involved as peer reviewers to help improve the guidelines specific to conditions in Sarawak.

The Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering welcomed the visit from Mr John Wong, Deputy Director (Mechanical) ,JKR Kuching  and Ir Irwan Podin, Managing Director, Epsilon Jurutera Perunding Sdn.Bhd for a BOS meeting. The objective of the meeting was to review the proposal of a Master of Engineering (Mechanical) taught course programme offered by the department. The meeting chaired by the MEng Coordinator, Dr Marini Sawawi  began with a welcoming speech from the Deputy Dean (Undergraduate and Student Development) of the Faculty of Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr Abdullah Yassin and followed by the presentation of the proposal by the Head of Department, Dr Shahrol Mohamaddan. Overall, the subsequent discussion was very productive with thoughtful insights for the improvements of the proposed programme. The event concluded with a gift presentation ceremony by Assoc. Prof. Dr Abdullah Hj Yassin.

Twenty three participants from different backgrounds and level of qualifications complete a 10 days Certified Solar PV Course organized by the Faculty of Engineering in collaboration with Elcorp Sdn Bhd today. The participants are from Syarikat SESCO Bhd, SHOREFIELD Sdn Bhd, International College of Advance technology Sarawak, X-FAB Sarawak, BT Solar Sdn Bhd  Dermaga Naluri Sdn Bhd, JK Technology Sales and Services, Utai Engineering &Electrical and KM Electrical Services.  The 10 days course provides students with knowledge on the theory of Solar PV technology, design of PV system and installation and testing of stand-alone PV system. Upon passing the course the participants will receive certificate of competency on Solar PV system Design and Installation which is endorsed by UNIMAS and SERI from UKM. In his closing ceremony remarks, the Dean, Assoc. Prof. Dr Al-Khalid thanks HRDF for funding the course and also to Elcorp Sdn Bhd for successfully brings the competency course to Sarawak. He also hopes that the participants make good use of their knowledge to get involved in projects to light up the underserved community and also to promote green energy applications in Sarawak.The next batch of participants for the same course is expected to enroll in March next year. Follow-up to this course, an intermediate and advance course will be organized for the first and second batch sometime in the middle of next year.

Site Visit to CMS Clinker, Kuching

On January 8, 2016, a site visit to CMS Clinker, Kuching consisting of 11 students (seven final year students and four postgraduate students) from Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering were conducted. The site visit was initiated by one of the department’s alumnus, Mr Muhammad Shukry Fasihuddin, who is also currently a MEng student of Ir Dr Danial Ibrahim. CMS Clinker, (one of Cahya Mata Sarawak subsidiaries) is the largest manufacturing plant in Kuching and the sole clinker manufacturer in East Malaysia. 
 
 

The visit was accompanied by two lecturers, Ir Dr Danial Ibrahim and Mr Abang Mohamad Aizuddin Abang Mohd Mohtar. The objective of the visit is to expose our future engineers on how the clinker is being manufactured, before being utilized in cement industries. The operation consists primarily of limestone crushing, raw material grinding, coal grinding and clinkering through kiln burning. Throughout this visit, students were exposed to various heavy machineries and equipment that is being used in a clinker manufacturing plant. Mr Shukry Fasihuddin, who is the person in charge for the trip is the Mechanical Condition Based Monitoring Engineer of the plant. We would like to express our appreciation to CMS Clinker for hosting us that day and hopefully this visit will lead to more visits for our future engineers in the future.

 Title: Efficient Congestion Management Framework using Compression Techniques
 

Abstract:
In this research, congestion control management mechanisms are investigated to introduce a new direction for aiding in solving network congestion. Existing mechanisms that directly or indirectly help to eliminate the congestion problem were being investigated. The proposed generic efficient congestion management (ECM) framework can be applied to minimize the impact of network congestion by orchestrating different existing congestion management mechanism with the newly introduced compressed MPLS mechanism. The ECM framework offers an overall idea on how to help in improving congested networks throughput by reducing the impact of network congestion. In other words, ECM framework can indirectly help congestion points or links of the entire network (Internet). ECM framework can be re-engineered to cooperate with other possible mechanisms (i.e., network coding) for further reduction of network congestion.
