UNIMAS teams won two championship awards at National Symposium 2013


KUCHING: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) made Sarawak proud and itself proven when the teams from Chemical Enginering Department and Energy Sustainability, Faculty of Engineering, achieved two champions at the National Chemical Engineering Symposium (NACES) held by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Bangi from Dec 14 to 16.There were altogether 13 representatives from UNIMAS which consists of final year, third year and second year student. This team was led by the lecturers Dr. Shanti Faridah Salleh and Mr. Ibrahim Yakub.UNIMAS team had joined all the competitions held in UKM. Individual category consisted of Malay Speech and Technical Essay Writing. Fiouna Dok Wan participated and did her best on this section. For Technical Essay Writing, Deviana Endia Pani and Mohd Iqmal joined this part and the essay written by Mohd Iqmal managed to enter top 10 with his technical essay entitled Climate Change: Reengineering A Better Future.
Technical Plant Design, Technical Case Study Technical Power Point Presentation and Technical Video Presentation were categories in the form of group. For Technical Plant Design, a team of 4 students named Low Ken Giap, Kam Yat Seng, Tan Sung Ping and Ling How Kui won the Champion with the design of production of power plant by using ethanol that produced from banana stem. They had impressed all the three judges on their creativity and their ability to put forward their design consideration in term of technical feasibility, environment, safety and socio economic point of view to beat Universiti Sains Malaysia (2nd place) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (3rd place).  Josephine Lai Chang Hui (Group 1), Khadijah Hajon (Group 8) and Tiara Afira Julaihi (Group 4) were joined in the Technical Case Study in different groups. Group 1 won the Champion with the idea of utilizing the fiber to produce unbleached papers. Fiouna Dok Wan, Sherena Sar-ee and Mohd Iqmal managed to enter top 6 over the 20 groups joined. For Technical Video Presentation, Nur Syakina binti Jamali and Chang Wei Long were team up to join for this category. Both the categories needed to create a Power Point slide and video that covered the climate change prevention by considering health, safety, environment, economy, facilities and public concern. At closing ceremony, Professor Dr Othman A Karim, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students and Alumni Affairs) of UKM presented the prize to the winners. There were about 300 participants from 17 institutions of higher learning from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore took part in this competition. The three-day symposium welcomed both public and private institutions to join to showcase creative and innovative idea in addressing environmental issues.
This symposium ended successfully and the host for NACES 2013 is Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Penang.
