Final presentation for Integrated Design Project (IDP) for Semester 1 2015/16 was successfully conducted on 8 December 2015 at Faculty of Engineering Meeting Room, UNIMAS. For the first time, the presentation has gathered academician as well as industrial representatives and related agencies to witness the students’ work since the course has been offered from the past three years. Panel from industries are Mr Esmawandi Mohd Esa, Director of SME Corp, Mr Jerry Shahnizal Ab Aziz, Senior Consultant from MPC Sarawak, Miss Liyana Othman, Consultant from MPC Sarawak, Mr Ir Irwan Podin, consultant from Epsilon Jurutera Perunding (S) Sdn. Bhd and Mr Hielmi and Mr Azman from Dayang Salhah Food Industry. Representatives from Vice Chancellor’s Office, Associate Prof Dr Dr Mohd Ibrahim Safawi, Assistant Vice Chancellor and Dr Harry ak Entebang from UNIMAS  Holdings Sdn Bhd were also attended in the oral presentation. Members of Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering were also attended during the presentation as internal evaluators. Total of 102 final year students from five companies namely Titanium Engineering, Alvess (M) Limited, Excel Engineering, Malcrom and Kezo have presented their remarkable ideas to the panel.

This time (2015/2016 session), the IDP course aims to improve the production of Sarawak Layered Cake (SLC) industry. Acknowledging potential of the SCL to go beyond the local market, the tedious traditional process has to be improved. The traditional process is highly dependent on manual labours and the labours skills is failed to cope with the current demand. The problem that happened in our local industry attracts the attention of Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering to study on semi-automation of SLC. The project received full cooperation from Dayang Salhah Food Industries Sdn. Bhd. In order to achieve the company’s objective, each company which consists of 20 to 21 engineers was assigned to four different departments. The departments are divided into depositing department, baking department, pressing and cooling department, and PLC and conveyer department. These companies have spent about three months to complete the project.

The presentation was conducted from 9:00 am till 5:00 pm in which each company was allocated with 1 hour presentation time and another 15 minutes for question and answer session. The presentation session started off with the welcoming speech from Associate Professor Dr Al Khalid Othman and ended at 5:00 pm. In conclusion, the presentation was a fruitful discussion where constructive feedbacks were given by all evaluators. From participation of industries and relevant agencies in this event, it is hope that the development of semi-automated of Sarawak Layered Cake machine will come true.

KUCHING, Nov 9 (Bernama) -- It was a successful outing for Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) at the 67th International Trade Fair for "Ideas-Inventions-New Products" (iENA) in Nuremberg, Germany from Oct 29 to Nov 1.Its vice-chancellor Prof Dato' Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi said UNIMAS won a gold, a silver and two bronze awards for its efforts.Speaking to the media here today, he said more than 36 countries participated in the fair with 700 products introduced."The gold award came from our Engineering Faculty lecturer, Prof Dr M. Shahidul Islam."He submitted his product, 'Novel Research on Desalination Process Plant Capacity Optimization: In the Aspect of Commercialization, Energy and Environment Sustainability," Mohamed Kadim said. He said back home, Shahidul's entry had been used to provide treated and clean water from the river for the villagers of Kampung Sadong Jaya, here.

C. Successful Piloting of Biomass membrane base Desalination Research product  of  Prof. Dr.Engr. M. Shahidul Islam

Two pilot projects have been successfully commissioned in Malaysia. The first one at Sadong Jaya, Sarawak  on 1st February, 2015. Project open to public  by YB Nancy Shukri  on 06.02.2015 to. The Second one is at Kg Lalhoh , Kelantan on 10th March, 2015. The product water of these plant are dedicated for public use.  Dato’ Prof. Dr. Mohamad Kadim Suaidi, Vice Chancellor, UNIMAS has officially  open to Public

 Title: Emulsion Liquid Membrane for Reactive Dye Removal from Aqueous Solution
 
Abstract:
The aim of this study is to formulate a system for removal of reactive dye such as Turquoise Blue (TB), Red 3BS (R3BS) and Black B (BB) from aqueous solution using emulsion liquid membrane (ELM) process. In liquid membrane formulation, several carriers and stripping agents were used to test extraction performance on reactive dyes using liquid-liquid extraction process. The extraction of TB, R3BS and BB were almost 100% using Tridodecylamine (TDA). In general, the ELM formulation was employed and successfully removed reactive dyes. This study showed that the formulation of ELM for the removal of reactive dyes from aqueous solution was excellent. The advantage of this research is the recovering of the dyes. High voltage coalesce was applied to break the emulsion hence, enables recovery of dyes in the receiving phase.

 


Professor Dr Amir Azam Khan delivers a Keynote at the National Conference on Research and Innovation 2015

Prof Dr Amir Azam Khan delivered a keynote talk on the occasion of National Research and Innovation Conference (NRICon2015). The talk was on the topic of “Sintering of High Performance Ceramics: Present and Future Challenges”. The NRICon 2015 was organized by Kuching Polytechnic Sarawak, at Regency Hotel Kuching on 1st December, 2015, aimed at transferring advanced knowledge between scientists and Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) Centres in Malaysia. The Chief Guest for the closing ceremony was Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (Promotion of Technical Education and Environment), Datu Len Talif Salleh. Also present on the occasion was Politeknik Kuching Sarawak Director Tuan Haji Sahul Hamed Haji Abdul Wahab.

During his Keynote talk, Professor Khan spoke about the traditional ceramics, engineering ceramics and advanced ceramics, their position in the development of present and future industries. He discussed the most recent research being conducted on Ultra High Performance Ceramics such as borides and carbides and presented some results on sintering of boride-carbide ceramic composites sintered at 1900 °C.

The Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering welcomed the visit from Prof. Ir. Dr Ahmad Kamal Ariffin Mohd Ihsan from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) for a BOS meeting.

The objective of the meeting was to review the proposal of a Master of Engineering (Mechanical) taught course programme offered by the department. It began with a welcoming speech from the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr Al-Khalid Hj Othman and followed by the presentation of the proposal by the Head of Department, Dr Shahrol Mohamaddan. Overall, the subsequent discussion was very productive with thoughtful insights for the improvements of the proposed programme.

The event concluded with a gift presentation ceremony attended by the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering (Undergraduate and Student Development), Assoc. Prof. Dr Abdullah Hj Yassin.
