Master of Public Health (MPH),Doctor of Public Health (Dr PH)

This is a full time program that prepares medical doctors for the Master of Public Health and Doctor of Public Health (Dr PH) degrees. On successful completion of the first year program the candidate is awarded the Master of Public Health degree. During the following three years the program prepares the graduates for the Dr PH degree. Guidance will be provided by experienced, dedicated and qualified lecturers to ensure that the candidates are kept in touch with innovative, up to date developments in public health-related issues and community based developments.

The MPH program is divided into three components, each defining a specific functional area of study. The components are: Core, Professional, Project and Research. The core component contains core courses which are compulsory for all students of Master of Public Health. The courses provide background knowledge and skills in public health which are required for any public health expert. The professional component consists of courses which provide knowledge and skills related to professional public health matters.

The Project and Research components comprise a series of research related courses and a research project. The project requires students to demonstrate and present a critical approach to specific issues of public health matters. To complete the MPH program, a candidate must accumulate 14 credit hours of Core Components, 18 credit hours of Professional Components and 8 credit hours of Project and Research. The Dr PH program comprises 78 credit hours of course work, and 30 credit hours dedicated to research. This program spans over a period of three years.

The degrees awarded are:

MPH (General) – 1 year

Dr PH (Health Promotion) – 3 years

Entry Requirement:

MPH Program:

Candidates must possess the following qualifications:

  1. Medical Doctor (M. D.) or M.B.B.S. from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak(UNIMAS) or other institutions of higher education as approved by the Senate.
  2. At least two years of clinical work experience.
  3. Registered with Malaysian Medical Council (for local students)
  4. Tuition fee for international students: MR5950.00 or USD1700.

Dr PH Program:

Candidates must possess the following qualifications:

  1. Candidates possess MPH degree from UNIMAS or other institutions of higher education approved by the Senate.
  2. Pass the entrance examination.
  3. Registered with the Malaysian Medical Council (for local students)
  4. English proficiency at least IELTS band 6.0 Tuition fee for international students: MR15570.00 or USD4400.

Program Schedule:

  1. Intake is once a year, normally in June every year.
  2. Course type: MPH – Course work and Project. Dr PH - Course work, Field Posting and Research.
  3. Work burden: MPH – Course work (34 credit hours) and project (6 credit hours).
  4. Dr PH – Course work (78 credit hours ) and research project (30credit hours)

1. How long has FMHS, UNIMAS offered the MPH and Dr PH programs?

The MPH program started in June 2004. The Dr PH program started in June 2009.

2. When is the intake?

Intake is once a year, normally in June.

3. How much the tuition fee?

The tuition fee for the one-year MPH program is RM5959. or USD1700. The tuition fee for the 3 years Dr PH program is RM15570. or USD4400.

4. Where will the classes be held?

Classes are held in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences building in UNIMAS, Kota Samarahan. 

5. What is the medium of instruction?

The course will be conducted in English.
