Prevalence and antibiotic susceptibility profile of microbial pathogens carried in the human upper respiratory tract in Sarawak

This project is in collaboration with the University of Southampton Malaysia Campus and University of Southampton, UK. We are looking into the prevalence of opportunistic pathogens such as but not limited to Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Respiratory tract infections are a serious health concern as the germs that cause these infections are commonly carried in the general population. High carriage rates increase the rate at which infections are passed on and may facilitate the development of life-threatening infections such as pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis. There is also a high possibility of these germs to undergo selection to become resistant to current antibiotics and vaccines.

The successful candidate will be based in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak and is required but not limited to: recruit volunteers from the hospitals and villages in Sarawak, collect specimens, perform microbiological culture and isolation, molecular characterisation and antibiotic susceptibility profiling.

The candidate:

1.    shall possess a MSc and BSc in microbiology, biomedical sciences or any relevant field.

2.    excellent command of the English language.

3.    command in other languages such as Mandarin, Iban, Bidayuh etc will be an added advantage.

4.    must be a people-centered person and be willing to travel to the interior of Sarawak. Experience in volunteer recruitment and patient clerking is an added advantage.
