Prof Balbir Singh, FASc, who was recently elected as a Fellow of the prestigious Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), attended the Conferment of ASM Fellowship ceremony in KL on 31st October 2015. The Fellowship certificate was presented to Prof Balbir by Datuk Seri Panglima Madius Tangau, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation. Also present on stage were the President and Vice-President of ASM, Tan Sri Dr Ahmad Tajuddin Ali and Prof Dato' Dr Asma Ismail, respectively. Prof Balbir was one of 25 who was conferred as a Fellow of ASM that day. The election of new Fellows is crucial to ensure sustainability of the ASM since the ASM taps the expertise, knowledge and network of its Fellows to provide Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) input to the government and stakeholders. Through Fellows, ASM continues to demonstrate its commitment in the international STI arena through its strategic membership of multilateral STI networks, its active role in governance of these networks, and its participation in important global scientific interactions. At the national level, a Fellow through the Academy has the opportunity to advance their ideas to push the envelope for S&T development in the country.

PhD vacancy (Advertisement date 14/8/2015)

Prevalence and antibiotic susceptibility profile of microbial pathogens carried in the human upper respiratory tract in Sarawak

This project is in collaboration with the University of Southampton Malaysia Campus and University of Southampton, UK. We are looking into the prevalence of opportunistic pathogens such as but not limited to Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Respiratory tract infections are a serious health concern as the germs that cause these infections are commonly carried in the general population. High carriage rates increase the rate at which infections are passed on and may facilitate the development of life-threatening infections such as pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis. There is also a high possibility of these germs to undergo selection to become resistant to current antibiotics and vaccines.

The successful candidate will be based in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak and is required but not limited to: recruit volunteers from the hospitals and villages in Sarawak, collect specimens, perform microbiological culture and isolation, molecular characterisation and antibiotic susceptibility profiling.

The candidate:

1.    shall possess a MSc and BSc in microbiology, biomedical sciences or any relevant field.

2.    excellent command of the English language.

3.    command in other languages such as Mandarin, Iban, Bidayuh etc will be an added advantage.

4.    must be a people-centered person and be willing to travel to the interior of Sarawak. Experience in volunteer recruitment and patient clerking is an added advantage.

5.    be interested in the possibility of a placement in the UK.

6.    possess own transport.

The successful candidate is required to register as a PhD candidate with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak and apply for a scholarship.

Interested applicant should submit a recent CV and an expression of interest to Dr Tan Cheng Siang @ This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
