My research is mainly focus on environmental chemistry. In my research, various environmental samples were collected and analyzed by utilizing many analytical instruments such as ICP-MS, ICP-AES, AAS and nuclear analytical techniques (NAA and PGA) in order to determine trace/toxic elements in these samples. The aims are to find out the concentrations of these elements and to assess the level of environmental pollution. Examples of my research include air particulate analysis, marine pollution studies, toxic elements in fish and biomonitoring. My other research interest is cosmochemistry where the chemical compositions of meteorites would tell us about the evolution of our solar system in the past. Apart from that, I am interested in QA/QC of analytical methods which is an important part of analytical work. 

Fasihuddin Badruddin Ahmad

Studies on natural products from terrestrial plants, marine organism and biopolimers are my specific interest. Various plants especially from the Annonaceae, Lauraceae, Piperaceae, Menispermaceae and Zingerberaceae families; various macroalgae; sponges and soft corals have been studied and interesting compounds have been isolated in our laboratory. Higher plants and marine organism are remarkable in their ability to produce a vast array of diverse metabolises varying in chemical complexity and biological activity. Natural products have historically served as templates for the development of many important classes of drugs. Further efforts are now being focused on the potential of natural products as agrochemical.

Borneo is the home for many ethnic groups, each maintaining their diverse yet unique ways of life, including the widespread practice of traditional cures and medicines. Even with the availability of modern medicine, traditional medical practices still persist, either as an alternative or as supplement to modern medicine. Many of the plants used are endermic to Borneo such as Goniothalamus velutinus. Thus it is highly probable that with appropriate technology and well coordinated research, new biologically active principals could be discovered especially for the treatment of emerging diseases such as viral diseases, cancer and AIDs, diseases of unknown etiology such as arthritis, muscular dystrophy and Parkinson, genetic diseases and many more. Biopolymers especially starch and modified starch products, galactomannans and biopolymers from macroalgae such as alginates, agar and carrageenan are useful products for various industries especially for stabilizing, gelling, emulsifying, thickening etc. The sources for the biopolymers are abundance and details physicochemical studies and also modification of this product will contribute significantly on the future application of this product.

My research areas encompass water and sediment quality and the application of statistics and mathematical modeling in the water and soil environment particularly those related to agriculture and aquaculture industries with the aim of promoting sustainable development for the benefits of mankind.

    My early research work focused on isolation and characterization of microbes from various environments. The emphasis was on searching for active indigenous microorganisms that can be exploited in the biotechnological conversion of biodegradable compounds into value-added products. An active soil bacterium isolated from sago pith waste has been successfully characterized and reported. Further study involving this microorganism is being actively pursued to investigate its biochemical properties with a view to better understand the mechanism involved in biodegradation.

    My recent work has focused on studying the occurrence and differentiation of microbes of importance from environmental and food sources. Analysis involved the use of conventional methods as well as using state-of the art technology involving molecular tools. The molecular tools include plasmid DNA analysis, ribotyping, hybridisation using DNA probes, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Among the microorganisms studied were B. pseudomallei, Bacillus sp., Aeromonas sp., Enterobacter and most recently, E. coli 0157 :H7.

    My major research interests cover two main disciplines: Bacterial Characterization and Biofuel Production.

    1. Bacterial Characterization

    My early research was on the molecular characterization and genetic analysis of Vibrio cholerae 01 from clinical samples. These included the studies to determine the genetic relatedness among isolates through PCR-based methods and the screening of specific genes (tcp, ace, ctx and zot) during cholera outbreaks. Other studies include the monitoring, isolation and molecular characteristics of  other important Vibrio spp. (V. cholerae non-01, V. parahaemolyticus, V. alginolyticus, V. vulnificus) from food and environmental sources in Sarawak. The more recent addition to my bacterial research is on the screening, phenotypic characterization and molecular ecology of potentially pathogenic Listeria monocytogenes and other opportunistic microbes that are present as indigenous microbiota (Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp.) on the human body. One on-going exercise is to generate information on the emergence and prevalence of antimicrobial agents resistance, as a regular exercise to monitor the presence of multi-resistant strains. This is aimed to determine the pattern of resistance towards popular hospital prescribed antibiotics and antimicrobial agents (i.e. tetracycline and chloramphenicol). Analysis would also involve the use of conventional methods as well as using state-of the art technology involving molecular tools, such as plasmid DNA analysis and polymerase chain reaction based methods (RAPD, ERIC, BOX elements, Nested, Multiplex and specific gene monitoring). Ultimately, these efforts are hoped to cover major important naturally occurring food borne pathogens.

    2. Biofuel Production

    Production of liquid biofuel (bioethanol and biodiesel) is presently one of the hottest research topic globally. Thus, biofuel production is the latest addition to my research port-folio after completing my doctorate in Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, majoring in Biorenewable Resources Technology with special emphasis on Biofuel Production. My research covers both Second Generation Bioethanol and Third Generation Biofuel (Microbial Lipids) studies. For the production of biofuel via the two platforms, we are looking into the feasibility of production by using agricultural waste (i.e. sago waste, palm oil waste) and industrial waste. The method employed for bioethanol production will include the enzyme based simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) procedure.  In this part of the studies, several key parameters that will be investigated include pretreatment technologies and feedstocks testing. As for the production of microbial lipids, selected oleaginous fungi will be screened for suitability against several variables such as feedstock types, retention periods and other bio-chemo-physio parameters. The long term goal is to hit small scale production. We hope to partner up with local biofuel producers and foster strong collaboration ties in this area.
