My research revolves around understanding the role of trace elements, particularly manganese, as a control on, and as a tracer of, major element cycles in the ocean. Trace metals are very crucial in living systems, particularly in photosynthesis and radical scavenging enzymes. Lack in any of those metals will result in limiting of the ocean production. Much of this work applies knowledge of basic chemical processes and its application in complex marine system. This complexity involves an interdisciplinary approach including chemistry, physics, geology and biology which are brought together to provide a comprehensive understanding of the behaviour and distribution of the elemental cycle under study. 

Previously, I had developed and modified the Flow Injection Analysis methods with two types of detectors:(1) kinetic catalytic detection, and (2) chemiluminescence (CL), which were able to analyse picomolar concentrations of dissolved manganese in seawater. These methods were successfully applied to seawater samples collected from the High Nutrient Low Chlorophyll (HNLC) region around the Crozet Islands of the Southern Ocean; and from the high dust input region of the tropical North-Eastern (NE) Atlantic Ocean.

My upcoming research will be focused on developing a low cost analyser in the ‘clean laboratory’ that will be using to analyse trace metals concentrations in seawater and sediment samples collected from the local coastal and riverine systems.
