Research Interests

I am the head of a research team focusing on the taxonomy, systematics, and biology of Araceae and Zingiberaceae in Sunda. In Araceae, we concentrate on Tribes Schismatoglottideae, Homalomeneae, Areae and subfamily Monsteroideae (Araceae). On-going projects include phylogenetic analyses of Schismatoglottideae and Homalomena, an investigation of their systematic significance, pollination mechanisms, floral scent analyses, and species distribution modeling. Outputs on Schismatoglottid Alliance to date include papers describing a new tribe, Philonotieae, and 5 new genera (Bakoa, Schottariella, Hestia, Ooia, Pichinia), together with the resurrection of two genera (Apoballis, Philonotion), and more than 50 novel species described. Outputs on Homalomena include, to date, 15 published papers covering novel taxa, molecular analyses of potentially evolutionary significant morphotaxa and pollination observations. These works are funded by Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia and Ministry of Science and Technology Malaysia.
