The Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation was set up in July 1994 as one of the founding institutions within UNIMAS with the purpose of promoting research in two niche areas-tropical biodiversity and environmental conservation. Its teaching and research programmes are structured at the masters, doctoral and postdoctoral levels.Research and teaching programmes in IBEC have been established upon the following two concepts:

1.The acquisition of knowledge concerning the significance and modes of subtainable development of natural resources is of paramount importance to Malaysia's future development.Developmentinitiatives will be self-defeating and socially destructive unless the structure, funtions and diversity of the nations'natural system are understood and judiciously protected.

2.Malaysia to forge ahead as a developed nation, the country's industries must seek to manage sustainable resource, because biodiversity and environmental conservation provide greater options and significant opportunities for diversificaion of industrial activities and economic development.

Molecular Laboratory

Molecular Laboratory

The IBEC Molecular Laboratory is one of the two laboratories under the Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental Conservation, whose mission is to investigate molecular biology and molecular genetics of the harmful marine microalgae. Research at the laboratory focuses on the tropical biodiversity, molecular systematics and evolution of this particular important group of microalgae. The laboratory is equipped with extensive instruments for molecular biology studies. Additionally, there is a facility for maintaining clonal cultures of these microalgae. Currently, more than two hundreds strains of toxic and potentially toxic harmful microlalgae are housed in the laboratory. The laboratory is one of the key research laboratories in Malaysia, and has established research networking with other key research laboratories in Japan, Denmark, Canada, Vietnam, China and USA. The laboratory also serves as a training center for Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) research at national and international levels. Three training courses have been successfully organized between 2009 and 2011. The laboratory provides a platform for postgraduate studies, and currently accommodate five PhD students and three MSc students.

Among the projects the students using this lab are:

IBEC Research Fellow & HOSCAP Borneo Project Leader
M. AppSc Conservation Biology (Queensland, Australia)
M. Tech Environmental Engineering (Karnataka, India)

Interested in the conservation and ecology of rare and threatened small carnivores in the Bornean rainforest, with particular reference to their adaptability to logging and logging-related pressures. Over the last 8 years, I have used different field monitoring and data analysis techniques to monitor the effects of logging on wildlife in Sarawak. I joined IBEC as a Research Fellow in 2012 and am now working on developing predictive models to understand the ecology and habitat use of small carnivores in a logging concession in Sarawak with particular focus on the Bornean endemic, the Hose’s Civet. I serve as a member of the IUCN (World Conservation Union) Small Carnivore Specialist Group and as an Associate Editor for the journal Small Carnivore Conservation
