Turut hadir Naib Cancelor UNIMAS Profesor Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi.
Sementara berhubung kos pembinaan hospital berkenaan, Zaini berkata ia dijangka bernilai RM400 hingga RM500 juta.

Work on proposed Unimas Hospital to start soon

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Construction of the proposed Unimas Hospital is expected to commence as soon as a formal agreement is finalised between Unimas, Unimas Holdings Sdn Bhd and the developer.
According to Higher Education Ministry secretary-general Dato Seri Dr Zaini Ujang, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the three parties had been signed two weeks ago and they were now finalising some details before signing a formal agreement.
“We are taking a third-party financing approach for this project. It is not a government grant. The three parties must agree through a formal agreement before we can forward it to the Cabinet for the final decision.
“We expect construction to begin as soon as the parties have formally agreed. As with past development projects, construction commences very fast as the developer gets the money later, not prior to construction,” he told a press conference after officiating at the Demand-Driven Innovation Project by Public-Private Research Network at Unimas yesterday.
Zaini said it was important for Unimas to get the highest benefits out of the project.
“Unimas should be able to generate a portion of its income through the hospital. It will be very different from other teaching hospitals, which are typical public hospitals.
“We have identified the need for some private sections in this hospital, allowing doctors to take part in private practice if they wish to. However, not all the money go to the doctors, but also back to Unimas.
“In fact, 30 per cent of Unimas income should come from sources such as this,” he said.
Zaini said the project was expected to cost RM400 million to RM500 million depending on things to be put in. This is one of the things that the parties involved are trying to finalise, which will affect the final cost,” he said.
On a separate note, Zaini said the ministry had approved the rebranding of two Unimas centres.
“The ministry has agreed to allow Unimas to rebrand its Languages Centre to the Faculty of Languages and also the set-up of a Unimas Business School.
“We only have to issue Unimas a formal letter. The change is likely to take effect from Jan 1 next year,” he said.

SMEs urged to take up expertise and product development

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are urged to be involved in expertise and product development through Public-Private Research Network (PPRN).
Higher Education Ministry secretary-general Dato Seri Dr Zaini Ujang said there were currently 162 companies and 263 projects under the PPRN initiative.
“I urge SMEs to be involved in the development of expertise and better products through PPRN cooperation. I believe they can produce better quality products that can be brought to a wider market.
“Innovations will help move our economy. That is why we must keep improving,” he said after officiating at the Demand-Driven Innovation Project by PPRN at Unimas yesterday.
Zaini said many people already knew about PPRN and how to go about it as well as how to apply it.
“Previously, there was some complication due to lecturers thinking they had the right to decide what the solution was. Academicians tend to be supply-driven…they come up with a finding or intellectual property and sell it.
“In reality, it is not like that. It is businesses that tell us whether we can sell or not. The solution is what the industry wants, and there is a need to fulfill the demand for technology that companies want,” he said.
Zaini added this was a big shift in idea that was happening in many countries.
“That is how companies develop, where universities support companies in terms of development of technology. By being specialised to specific company needs, there will be little or no competition,” he said.
PPRN is a new initiative of the Ministry of Education to increase productivity and strengthen Malaysia’s economic development through innovations and commercialisation programmes.
The objective is to create a knowledge-friendly ecosystem, an environment where knowledge is produced and diffused from those who have it to those who need it.
Besides the seminar, Zaini also launched of the Point of Purchase Programme Unimas-Mara under the Unimas Entrepreneurship Community Outreach Project.
Unimas vice-chancellor Prof Dato Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi, Mara Sarawak director Megat Zakaria Megat Ahmad, Higher Education Ministry Entrepreneurial Unit head Datin Dr Shahira Hamidon and Unimas deputy vice-chancellors Prof Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman and Prof Dr Kopli Bujang were also present
