eBorneo Knowledge Fair5 2015 @ Ba’Kelalan, the Heart of Borneo

Kota Samarahan, 19th November 2015 : The Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovations (ISITI-CRI) successfully kick-started the fifth eBorneo Knowledge Fair 2015 (eBKF5 2015) on 18 November 2015. 
The knowledge fair this year marks yet another milestone for ISITI as this is the first time that ISITI has organised the knowledge fair in Ba’Kelalan, the Heart of Borneo. 
The three-day event, which runs from 18-20 November 2015, began with the postgraduate colloquium, which saw the attendance of both local and international postgraduate students from various countries such as the United Kingdom, Sweden and Nigeria. 
The students presented the progress of their work in various areas of Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D), all of which were relevant to the goals and objectives of the knowledge fair which is to promote research that innovates with technologies in order to address the challenges and opportunities that remote and isolated indigenous communities face. 
Two workshops were also organised; namely Community Radio, which was facilitated by Professor Dr Roger Harris, a visiting professor from UNIMAS, together with local champions Stanley Issac and Cr. John Tarawe and Engaged Learning, which was facilitated by Associate Professor Dr Shorna Broussard Allred and Amy Kuo Somchanhmavong, both from Cornell University, United States of America. 
The event also saw the representation from various stakeholders such as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Maxis Sdn. Bhd, Pusat Internet 1 Malaysia (PI1M), researchers from UNIMAS, UUM, UCTS, Cornell University, Cambridge and Oxford University, Politechnique of Namibia, as well as members from the indigenous communities from Ba’Kelalan, Bario and Long Lamai. 
One of the highlights of the event was the welcoming ceremony, which saw the members of the Ba’Kelalan community welcoming all the delegates with several local performances. Community representative, Ketua Kampung Mr Yudan Meru also welcomed the participants to the event. Associate Professor Dr Poline Bala, from the Faculty of Social Sciences, UNIMAS, who is also the site leader of eBa’Kelalan, highlighted the aims and objectives of the eBKF5 2015 during her welcoming speech at the event. 
The keynote speech entitled “Community-based co-design of Indigenous Knowledge Technologies: Challenges and Opportunities” was delivered by Professor Dr Heike Winschiers from the Politechnique of Namibia. 
The eBKF5 this year aims at working on several areas of interest to the indigenous community, particularly the Lun Bawang community in Ba’Kelalan, and the rest of the world as a whole. 
 
 
 

Bersikap positif jadi resepi kejayaan Yahya

KOTA SAMARAHAN, 19 November 2015 : Menghidap penyakit folio sehingga menyebabkan pergerakannya terbatas bukan penghalang buat Yahya Jahawi, 29, untuk berjaya dan mengenggam segulung ijazah seperti insan normal lain.
Graduan dari Program Sistem Maklumat, Fakulti Sains Komputer dan Teknologi Maklumat UNIMAS ini yakin setiap orang boleh berjaya asalkan menanam sikap tidak mudah putus asa, tidak malu, sentiasa bersyukur dan berdoa akan kejayaan diri dari masa ke semasa.
Beliau berkata, pengajian selama empat tahun di UNIMAS mengajar beliau banyak perkara dan kenangan manis terutama  berkaitan dengan kawan-kawan dan tenaga pengajar yang sentiasa memberi dorongan dan bantuan selama ini.
“Saya menasihati golongan OKU lain supaya tidak mudah berputus asa dan sentiasa berusaha kerana untuk berjaya, kita juga harus bersikap positif selalu,” katanya.
Beliau menerima ijazah sarjana sains komputer dengan kepujian yang disampaikan oleh Tuan Yang Terutama Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak merangkap Canselor UNIMAS, Tun Pehin Sri Hj Abdul Taib Mahmud dalam sidang terakhir Majlis Konvokesyen UNIMAS Ke-19, Selasa lepas.
Anak pesara polis ini berasal dari Miri ditemani oleh ibunya, Dara Ebrahim, 69, dan abangnya,Marzuki Jahawi,42.

Pasangan kembar genggam ijazah bersama

KOTA SAMARAHAN, 18 November 2015 : Konvokesyen UNIMAS Ke-19 memberi makna besar buat pasangan kembar, Pauline Nanie Mula dan Paula Nanie Entia apabila dapat mengenggam Ijazah Sarjana Muda serentak pada waktu sama.
Kembar yang merupakan anak bongsu kepada pasangan Nating ak Juing dan isteri, Winnie ak Kulleh ini antara pelajar bergelar graduan dalam sidang kelima bagi Program Perancangan dan Pengurusan Pembangunan, Fakulti Sains Sosial.
Berasal dari Miri, pasangan kembar ini, melihat kejayaan mereka adalah hasil berkat doa dari keluarga termasuk kerjasama dan kepercayaan sesama mereka, kawan-kawan dan para pensyarah di UNIMAS.
Bagaimanapun, kata Paula, mengulangkaji pelajaran bersama tidak bermaksud bebas untuk berbuat apa sahaja.
“ Kita berdua sering berbincang bersama dan jika ada masalah, kita akan mencari penyelesaian secara aman. Bagi kami, tiada istilah cemburu atau berkecil hati sebaliknya kami berdua sering memberi sokongan sesama sendiri,” katanya.
Pasangan kembar ini yang juga anak bongsu dari empat adik beradik memegang cita-cita tinggi di mana kakaknya Pauline bercita-cita untuk menjadi Pegawai Daerah manakala Paula mahu menjadi seorang usahawan berjaya satu hari nanti.

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Students from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) put on a dazzling show to kickstart the university’s Convocation Festival.
The Citrawarna show is an annual event for the university’s residential colleges and invited secondary schools.
It is a platform for them to showcase their creativity through dance and other performances with participating colleges and schools also competing against each other in several categories.
This year’s show was themed “The Colours of the World”, inspiring participants to come up with performances that reflected not only Sarawak’s culture but those of other countries.
Among others, there were performances of traditional dances from Thailand and Japan.
Performers from Kolej Seroja put on a show featuring travels from Malaysia to Africa and other parts of the world.
The show featured an array of colourful costumes and props, from headgear and fThe evening ended with a performance titled “Fascinating Sarawak” and a samba parade.
Kolej Alamanda emerged as multiple winners in this year’s Citrawarna, winning the residential college category and the best costume award.
They received a cash prize of RM2,000 as champions and RM500 for best costume.
In second place was Kolej Bunga Raya, which also picked up the best music award, while Kolej Cempaka took third place.
The secondary school category was won by SMK Kota Samarahan, followed by SMK Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Gapor and Sekolah Seni Malaysia in second and third places.

The best costume award in the school category went to SMK Hajah Laila Taib while SMK St Teresa won the best music award.
Meanwhile, the special jury award went to Kolej Kenanga and SMK Wira Penrissen.
The prizes were presented by Assistant Tourism Minister Datuk Talib Zulpilip.
Unimas’ Convocation Festival has been extended to seven days this year with various events and activities lined up.
These include a tug-of-war, duathlon challenge, book fest, movie night, singing contests, battle of the bands, bowling championship, street festival and healthcare day.
