Unimas Research Centre Can Meet Score's Needs For More Engineers

KUCHING, July 2 (Bernama) -- The state government is optimistic that the proposed establishment of the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) research centre in Mukah can produce enough engineers to meet the area's future manpower demand, Sarawak Infrastructure Development and Communications Minister Datuk Seri Michael Manyin said.

He said Sarawak had plenty of investment opportunities in the heavy industries, aquaculture, energy and high tech industries within the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (Score) while Unimas' new green technolgy could be applied to treat wastewater and reduce soot and sulphur dioxide (SOx) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

"I am sure this knowledge and technology can be used to enhance the environmental management aspect of Score," he said when officiating at the opening of the sixth International Engineering Conference (ENCON 2013), organised by Unimas Engineering Faculty here.

He said the relationship between Unimas and the renewable energy industries, government agencies and overseas institutions of higher learning had reached a very encouraging level, particularly relating to Score, which was one of the country's five regional development corridors.

In addition to numerous consultations and research collaborations in various fields that were successful, he said, Unimas was also the coordinator of U-SCORE, an avenue for global community to strengthen cooperation and understanding towards good bilateral relations.
