KUCHING: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) managed to develop quality human capital during its 20 years in existence.

Its former vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid said this could be seen from the number of graduates now holding important posts or working as decision makers in the private sector.

“We have Unimas graduates working in corporations, and a large number of them pursued higher education in well-known universities in the United Kingdom, Japan and the United States,” said Khairuddin during a farewell dinner for him here on Thursday.

Khairuddin said the university emphasised on quality since day one, and it achieved this through initiatives such as balanced score cards and innovation groups.

He reminded Unimas staff to practise good work ethics of the Japanese.

“Be disciplined, be on time, be critical of all work procedures, be systematic in delivering all required work, and respect your colleagues.

“This is vital to ensure a healthy and happy workplace.”

Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Kadim Suaidi, in his speech, said during his predecessor’s term in office, students’ intake increased from 8,000 in 2008 to 14,000 this year.

“This is an indicator of Unimas’ success, which is also a statement of the university as a premier choice for those seeking higher education.”

He added that Unimas is now the seventh top university in the country, and ranked 181 among 500 universities in the
QS Asian University Rankings 2013.
