Jabu appointed second Pro-Chancellor of Unimas

KUCHING: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang has been appointed Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas). 

Jabu’s appointment as Unimas second Pro-Chancellor is effective 8 October, 2013 after Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmaud was appointed Unimas Pro-Chancellor in 1997.

The presentation of the appointment credential was presented by Unimas Vice-Chancellor Prof Dato’ Dr Mohammad Kadim Suaidi at Jabu’s office at Wisma Bapa Malaysia, yesterday and witnessed by Unimas Board of Directors chairman Datu Dr Hatta Solhi, Deputy Vice-Chancellors, namely, Prof Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman (Student Affairs & Alumni), Prof Dr Fatimah Abang (Academics & International) and Prof Dr Peter Songan (Research & Innovation) and Unimas Registrar Haji Abu Bakar Ibrahim. 

On his appointment as Unimas second Pro-Chancellor, Jabu said he felt very honoured with the high trust given by the Ministry of Education and would do his best to see to the university’s excellence in the field of education.

“Everyone is aware that education is the key factor of life. Unimas has been in existence for 21 years and will be a catalyst for progress in the field of education to produce quality graduates,” he said.

He added that to ensure continued excellence, Unimas infrastructure for the convenience of students would be upgraded from time to time.

Betong-born Jabu graduated from Lincoln University of New Zealand in 1966 in the field of Agriculture Sciences.

He  was conferred honorary Doctor of Natural Resources from Lincoln University in 1997 for his outstanding contributions in the development of agriculture and natural resource management in Sarawak.

At the beginning of his career starting in 1967, he served as an Agriculture Officer for seven years before entering politics in 1974.

His first post in the State Cabinet was Assistant Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports in 1974. Since then, he held various ministerial portfolios, including being appointed Deputy Chief Minister till now.

With his significant contributions in the planning and development of Sarawak as well as the state’s agriculture sector and rural areas, Jabu has officially become the newest member of Unimas community by being appointed its Pro Chancellor.

The official ceremony for Jabu’s appointment will be held at 9 November, 2013 in conjunction with the Unimas 17th Convocation 2013 which is scheduled to be graced by the Head of State, Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhammad Salahuddin, who is also Chancellor of Unimas.
