Unimas researchers bag 16 medals at Pecipta

PROUD WINNERS: Unimas researchers with their medals and certificates at Pecipta 2013.

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Researchers from University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) bagged 16 medals from the International Exposition of Research and Invention of Institutions of Higher Learning 2013 (Pecipta) recently.

They had recently participated in the exposition that was jointly organised by the Ministry of Education, Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) from Nov 7 to 9 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

The objective of Pecipta’13 was to exhibit the inventions, innovations and other outcomes emanating from researches undertaken by all the public institutions of higher learning in the country.

A press release issued yesterday highlighted that Unimas had showcased 15 inventions at the exposition and took home one Special Award, one Gold, seven Silver and seven Bronzes.

The project entitled ‘WikiTours: Achieving Performance Sustainability Through Spatial Integration’ led by Associate Prof Dr Lo May Chiun from the Faculty of Economics and Business won the Gold Medal.

The project also won the Special Award awarded by Qatari Invention from Qatar.

The seven innovations that won the silver medals were ‘I-Bamboo Transit Bicycle’ by Prof Dr Khairul Aidil Azlin Abdul Rahman from Institute of Design and Innovation; ‘Ecomod from Sago Biomass’ and ‘Biochar Drawing Media’ by Associate Prof Dr Nazlina Shaari from Institute of Design and Innovation; ‘Silcat 2.0: Eco-Catalysts For Efficient Biodiesel Production’ by Associate Prof Dr Zainab Ngaini of the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology; ‘Novel Enzymes For Efficient Bioethanol Production From Solid Biomass’ by Associate Prof Dr Abu Salleh Ahmed from the Faculty of Engineering; ‘Efficient Biodiesel Production From Jatropha Oil By Using Novel Catalyst as A Clean Fuel For Diesel Engine’ by Associate Prof Dr Abu Salleh Ahmed from the Faculty of Engineering; and ‘e-TORO: Indigenous Botanical Knowledge Management System Of Penan’ by Associate Prof Dr Alvin Yeo We from the Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovations.

The recipients for the Bronze Medals were Dr Noor Alamshah Bolhassan (Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology) – ‘Ecodemia: Integrated Organisation Learning Management System’; Dr Chin Suk Fun (Faculty of Resource Science and Technology) – ‘Magnetic Cellulose Aerogel With High Oil Absorption Capacity’; Associate Prof Dr Siti Noor Linda Taib (Faculty of Engineering) – ‘Shallow Peat And Soft Soil Sampler With Detachable Molds’; Dr Cheah Wai Shiang (Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology) – ‘Sympulse-Community Health Screening Technolog’; Assoc Prof Dr Puah Chin Hong (Faculty of Economics and Business) – ‘Measuring Business Cycle Fluctuation: An Alternative Precursor To The Economic Crises’; Chuah Kee Man (Centre for Language Studies) – ‘Leximinds 2.0 – Adaptive Mobile Vocabulary Learning App’; and Assoc Prof Dr Awang Ahmad Sallehin Awang Husaini (Faculty of Resource Science and Technology) – ‘AgriBioActiv-SF: Green Biological Control Agent And Biofertiliser For Total Organic Solution’.
