Unimas researchers excel at fair

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) researchers once again marked their excellence in the international exposition with an outstanding achievement at the Seoul International Invention Fair (SIIF) 2013 held at Seoul Convention & Exhibition Center (COEX) from Nov 29 to Dec 2.

According to a press statement, the fair, organised by the Korea Invention Promotion Association (Kipa), is regarded as one of the largest invention fairs in the world.

More than 700 inventions and innovations from 31 countries were showcased at this year’s SIIF.

The Unimas team of researchers showcased eight inventions and was awarded two Gold, one Silver and four Bronze medals.

The Gold medals were awarded to Associate Professor Dr Puah Chin Hong (Faculty of Economics and Business) and his co-researchers for the project on ‘Measuring Business Cycle Fluctuations: An Alternative Precursor to the Economic Crises’ and also the project ‘Leximinds 2.0: Adaptive Mobile Vocabulary Learning App’ which was led by Chuah Kee Man from the university’s Centre for Language Studies.

The Silver medal was awarded to ‘SilCAt 2.0: Solid Catalysts for Efficient Biodiesel Production’ project led by Associate Professor Dr Zainab Ngaini (Faculty of Resource Science and Technology).

Meanwhile, the Bronze winners comprised of ‘I-Bamboo Transit Bicycle’ led by Professor Dr Khairul Aidil Azlin Abdul Rahman (Institute of Design and Innovation), ‘BioChar Drawing Media’ and ‘EcoMod from Sago Biomass’ led by Associate Professor Dr Nazlina Shaari (Institute of Design and Innovation) and ‘FrontTier: Community Health Monitoring System’ led by Dr Cheah Wai Shiang (Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovation).

The recognitions signify the institution’s on-going pursuit to be the leader of development (R&D) within its niche areas.
