Unimas shines at M’sia Technology Exposition

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) has once again proven its outstanding expertise in research and development at a research exposition held recently in Kuala Lumpur.

A publicity release yesterday revealed that Unimas bagged two Special Awards, two Gold medals, three Silver medals and four Bronze medals, out of twelve products exhibited at the Malaysia Technology Exposition (MTE) 2014.

The MTE 2014 was held at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) from Feb 20 to 22.

MTE is an annual event which showcases inventions and innovations to a targeted audience of trade visitors.

Since its inception in 2001, MTE has been the leading international invention and innovation expo in the region, whereby researchers, scientists and innovators from the public sector, industrial practitioners, private institutions of higher learning and individuals have a chance to showcase their research projects.

A project entitled ‘WikiTours: Achieving Business Tourism Publicity through Spatial Integration’ led by Assoc Prof Lo May Chiun secured one of the two gold medals that Unimas won.

The same project was also granted two Special Awards namely the ‘Leading Innovation Award’ awarded by the Japan Patent Office, and the ‘Gold Medal’ from the Jury Panel.

The second Gold Medal was won by Dr Noor Alamshah Bolhassan through his research project entitled ‘Ecodemia: Integrated Organisation Learning Management System’.

The complete list of Unimas achievements at the MTE was as follows. The Silver medals were won by Prof Dr Hj Khairul Aidil Azlin, Institute of Design and Innovation for ‘I-Bamboo Transit Bicycle’; Prof Dr Narayanan Kulathuramaiyer, Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovationse for ‘TORO: Indigenous Botanical Knowledge Management System Of Penan’; and Assoc Prof Dr Puah Chin Hong, Faculty of Economics and Business, for ‘Measuring Business Cycle Fluctuation: An Alternative Precursor To The Economic Crises’.

The Bronze medals winners were Assoc Prof Dr Zainab Ngaini, Faculty of Resource Science and Technology for ‘Silcat 2.0: Eco-Catalysts For Efficient Biodiesel Production’; Assoc Prof Dr Awang Ahmad Sallehin Awang Husaini, Faculty of Resource Science and Technology, for ‘AgriBioActiv-SF: Green Biological Control Agent And Biofertilizer For Total Organic Solution’; Dr Chin Suk Fun, Faculty of Resource Science and Technology, for ‘Magnetic Cellulose Aerogel With High Oil Absorption Capacity’; and Chuah Kee Man, Centre for Language Studies for ‘Leximinds 2.0 – Adaptive Mobile Vocabulary Learning App’.

Unimas participation at such a prominent exhibition shows the remarkable quality of research at the university.

With a strong leadership and exceptional dedication from the academic team at the university, it is clear that Unimas will continually to produce innovative inventions for many years to come.
