 8 Unimas researchers heading for ‘British Invention Show 2014’

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Eight researchers from University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) will be going to London for the ‘British Invention Show 2014’ from Oct 23 to 25 to showcase their findings and inventions.

The researchers were selected after winning gold award in four clusters in the ‘Unimas Research and Development Expo 2014’ with the theme ‘To enhance the scholastic, creative and innovative capabilities through quality research, innovation and commercialisation’ yesterday.

Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah who closed the exhibition handed over all the awards.

In the ‘Pure Science Cluster’ the award went to Dr Zainab Ngaini who did a research on ‘Sago Zorb 2.0: Biomass Filter Bed for Oil and Grease Removal’.

In the ‘Information Communication Technology Cluster’, the recipients were Dr Chiew Kang Leng and Dr Bong Chih How.

As for the ‘Social Science and Humanities Cluster’, the award went to Dr Lo May Chiun who did a research on ‘Holistic performance competencies index in small and medium enterprises in Malaysia, a spatial integration approach’; Chuah Kee Man whose work was based on ‘LexiEyes -the mobile lexical reading application for visually impaired learners’; and Muhammad Firdaus Abong Abdullah based on his research on ‘Tapau Bike – Experimentation of discontinued polystyrene container as core material for bike fame construction’.

In the ‘Technology and Engineering cluster’, Dr Abu Saleh Ahmed won two gold awards for his research on ‘novel enzymes for efficient bioethanol production from biomass’ and ‘Biodiesel production from algae by using novel catalyst as a renewable energy’.

Unimas vice-chancellor Professor Dato’ Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi was also present at the function.
