KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) will continue to strive towards producing graduates who can become the ‘agents of change’ in society.

Apart from education and spiritual enhancement, these scholars are expected to leave the campus with first-world mindset and mature attitude.

“All these, however, would only be possible if all of you (students) are willing to step up to the plate and become the generation who will shoulder the nation’s hope and future,” Unimas vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Kadim Suaidi during the oath-taking of new students at the university’s Arena Gemilang, DeTAR Putra here yesterday.

He also called on the new intake to take the opportunity to learn about campus life, hoping that they would persevere through the challenges with “brains, maturity and a positive attitude”.

On another note, Dr Kadim also urged students to adopt the 1Malaysia concept pushed forth by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“With so many different ethnic groups, political ideologies as well as economic and social standings in each of the 14 states, we are still one country – one that demands all of us to seek a common ground amid these differences,” he said, adding the concept was more significant in the state.

Meanwhile, the campus’ September 2014/2015 intake saw a total of 3,301 enrolling – 12 of whom are international students from Japan, France, Pakistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh and China.

Also present at the ceremony was Unimas board chairman Datu Dr Hatta Solhi, deputy vice chancellor (academic and international) Dr Fatimah Abang, deputy vice chancellor (student affairs and alumni) Prof Fadzil Abdul Rahman and deputy vice chancellor (research and innovation) Dr Kopli Bujang.
