European Union Delegation Visits UNIMAS

KOTA SAMARAHAN, 26th November: The best protection for our security is a world of well-governed democratic states.

These were the words of His Excellency Mr Luc Vandebon, Ambassador and Head of European Union Delegation to Malaysia as he closed the debate organized in conjunction with the European Union Delegation visit to UNIMAS.

“Spreading good governance, supporting social and political reform, dealing with corruption and abuse of power, establishing the rule of law and protecting human rights are the best means of strengthening the international order,” he added.

“The role of regional organisations has been under much scrutiny lately and we thought that it would make an interesting debate motion,” said Prof Dr Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), representing the Vice-Chancellor, in his opening remarks.

Earlier, a debate by UNIMAS students was conducted on the motion “This house believe that regional organisations (EU, ASEAN, etc) are better answers to deal with all the challenges the world faces”.

The motion covered issues such as the economy, politics and social reform as well as the security of the region.

During the Q&A session, the delegates praised the debaters’ passionate and inventive opinion on the issues which highlighted the role played by ASEAN in maintaining its regional peace and stability.

This visit, consisting of 12 EU Ambassadors with 2 officers, is part of the initiatives to make Malaysians better acquainted with the EU, through a variety of events that provide a platform for government officials, parliament, Malaysian and European businesses, researchers, students, the civil society and journalists to learn where Europe stands on current issues.

It is also part of efforts by both EU and Malaysia in strengthening their co-operation which includes political and security dialogue, environment, sustainable growth, research and technology, higher education, trade, human rights, and ASEAN integration.

The debate was held at the Experimental Theatre, Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts, UNIMAS.
