In 2013, the University’s Board of Directors (BOD) played an active role to assist the University in paving its path towards excellence.

LPU led by its chairman, Datu Dr Hatta Solhi, fulfilled their fiduciary duties, apart from ensuring that policies were formulated and approved in accordance with the provisions of Akta Penubuhan Badan Berkanun and did not conflict any existing law, government policies and directives (enactment).

Throughout 2013, LPU meetings and special LPU meetings were successfully and regularly held and as needed, especially those involving immediate implementation at the Executive level.

To ensure the transparency of efficient and effective management of UNIMAS, compliance to efficient Governance is LPU’s top priority because many decisions relating to the University’s Policies and Governance University were successfully reached to ensure the smooth running of the University’s management. In performing this role, LPU has worked closely with the University Management team (Executive Committee) to ensure the achievement of UNIMAS vision and mission. For instance, UNIMAS Strategic Plan was jointly outlined by the Board of Directors and the University’s management. This is to ensure that key performance indicators (KPI) of the University can be monitored and achieved.

In addition, the LPU is involved with Budget and Financial Control, Pelaburan Kumpulan Wang Yang Berlebihan, Maintenance of Account Records,  Preparation and Submission of Accounts, Annual Report, Auditors Report and Pengawasan Anak Syarikat. LPU has also directed an update on Subsidiary Governance and annual preparation of the University’s Business Plan.

During 2013, a number of policies and issues related to staffing, development and finance have been resolved as a result of the cooperation between the Board and the Executive. This includes issues related to the development of students’ colleges as well as key appointments for the positions of Treasurer and Registrar. The amendments to the University and University College Act (AUKU), Amendment 2012, have helped in resolving the issues. UNIMAS KPI achievement for 2013 demonstrated high level performance and excellence. In the coming years, special emphasis will be placed on niche areas that have been identified.

The benchmarking of the roles of LPU between public and private institutions of higher learning was also carried out in 2013. The University did a benchmarking visit from 12 to 14 June, 2013 and shared information on Best Practices with the University of Malaya (UM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Taylor’s University. The visit also involves observation on the best management practices for the University’s subsidiaries.

The year 2013 witnessed two leadership changes to the position of UNIMAS Vice-Chancellor, and thus the composition of Board of Directors. YBhg Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Ab Hamid ended his appointment as Vice Chancellor on March 31, 2013, and this gave way to YBhg Prof Dato’ Dr Morshidi Sirat to join the LPU as the new Vice-Chancellor. However, he left the post of Vice-Chancellor on 15 April UNIMAS, 2013 for the post of Director General at the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education Malaysia. Meanwhile, on July 1, 2013, the LPU lost a respected member, Dato’ Peter Minos, who has since resigned due to health reasons. Nonetheless, all three distinguished individuals have contributed to the pursuit of excellence through their brief and long-term involvement in UNIMAS LPU.

The appointment of YBhg Professor Dato’ Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi as UNIMAS Vice-Chancellor on 16 April 2013 saw the appointment of new members in Board of Directors. The membership increased through the appointment of Dr Haji Mohammad Hirman Ritom Abdullah and YB Puan Hajah Sharifah Hasidah Haji Sayeed Aman Ghazali to the BOD on October 1, 2013. In a short period of time, nearing the end of 2013, the LPU received many valuable feedbacks and suggestions to promote excellence from the two new members.

Finally, as in previous years, the Board will continue to make contributions, collaborate with stakeholders, and fully commit in efforts to propel UNIMAS towards excellence.
