KUCHING: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) has put up a board in memory of Rasli Buang, one of the nation’s heroes, at the Buntal Esplanade here yesterday.

According to a representative from Unimas, the board was designed specially by Faculty of Creative and Applied Arts lecturer Dr Yaakup Rafiee to display the heroism of Rasli Buang, who came from Kampung Buntal, against the communists.

“This activity is also part of the results from Unimas’ community transformation project which was led by lecturers from the Faculty of Science and Technology Resources.

“In addition, this was held in conjunction with the Unimas Strategic Plan Retreat with Board of Directors,” said the representative.

Other programmes that were held in conjunction with the programme involved students from SK Buntal and their parents in choral speaking classes, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) mind map workshops, motivational speeches as well as parenting seminars.

A total of 200 participants comprising Unimas board of director members, SK Buntal students and their parents took part in this programme.

“We organised this to expose students to the learning method of mind maps, especially in the Science subjects. Additionally, Unimas wishes to take SK Buntal as a foster school under the guidance of the Unimas Stem Education Lab.

“We also held the parenting course to let parents know the roles they can play to increase their children’s academic prowess as well as to find out what sort of challenges parents face in current times,” the representative added.

Present at the programme were Unimas Board of Directors chairman Datu Dr Hatta Solhi and Unimas vice chancellor Professor Dato' Dr Mohamad Kadim Suaidi.
