Academic libraries asked to apply value management

KOTA SAMARAHAN: The application of value management in academic libraries will increase the quality of services, aid in decision making as well as improve business practices, procedures and policies, said Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Ab Hamid.

He said the secondary benefits include team building among staff, reducing resistance to change, improving employee morale, continuing recognition of revenue improvements by staff and developing a value culture within the organisation.

Khairuddin also said librarians should know the impact of their services on library users.

“When librarians learn about their impact on users, they increase their value by proactively delivering improved services and resources to students, faculty and administrators,” he said when launching the 2nd Perpun International Conference and Workshop On Value Management For Libraries yesterday.

The two-day international conference and workshop aims to provide a platform for participants to share experiences in identifying core library services and to propose models based on best practices to measure library services.

It involves the presentation of six papers from the University of Syracuse in the US; University of Malaya; Universiti Putra Malaysia; Ebsco Publishing, Singapore; and UNIMAS.
