Malaysia gets boost for green, clean tech research

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is continuing to move forward on efforts to increase local research and development of their green energy, water management and clean technology sector.

On Monday, the Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry announced it was donating RM70,000 to Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) with the aim of assisting the university of implementing more research projects for this sector at the school.

The donation was delivered by Minister Peter Chin Fah Kui, at a symbolic presentation of the 1Malaysia Student Discount Card and a mentor programme research aid.

Chin, who is also Unimas’ mentor minister, said the ministry had contributed RM130,000 to the university for the same purpose last year.

He said five areas of research related to energy, green technology, water and sewerage had been conducted by the university with the fund.

Meanwhile, Unimas vice-chancellor Professor Khairuddin Ab Hamid, who received the contribution, said 12 final-year students had been involved in the research since last year.

It is part of the government’s overall efforts to increase the country’s look at alternative sources of energy, officials told Bikyamasr.com on Sunday in confirming the donation.

They said that the country has a wide expanse of land and area that could be used for green research and energy boosting in the country and hoped that more research will help increase local awareness of the sector.
