Unimas seeking funds for R&D hub

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak hopes to receive a RM50 million allocation from the Education Ministry to kick-start the construction of its research centre in Mukah.

Unimas vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Mohamad Kadim Suaidi said the centre would be a major focus for research activities, which could contribute to the continued development of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).

Realising the importance of education in supporting SCORE, the Sarawak government has already provided a 100-acre site for the centre.

"We have submitted the application for the allocation (of funds) to the Education Ministry, and hope it will be approved soon," said Kadim yesterday.

Kadim said the centre was very important to Unimas, as they were focusing on producing capable manpower and technologies to support SCORE.

Once completed, the centre would allow educators and students to carry out research related to the energy sector.

"We want to strengthen the position of Unimas as a major contributor to SCORE's research and development.

"We also want to generate ideas to further develop the energy industry in the state."

Kadim said the centre would be located strategically within the education zone in Mukah, and was in line with the state government's agenda to transform Mukah into a science park.

"The land for the proposed research and development centre is close to Politeknik Mukah and Universiti Teknologi Mara."
