Double wins for UNIMAS in Germany

Kota Samarahan, 30 September 2015, - Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) creates big waves at 15th IFIP TC.13 International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction - INTERACT 2015 took place from 14 to 18 September 2015 in Bamberg, Germany.  
Dr Tariq Zaman, a post-doctoral fellow at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, won the Interaction Design for International Development Award,a prestigious honor for his work on Penan’s Sign Language.  
The same paper won the Brian Shackel Award for recognition of the most outstanding contribution with international impact in the field of Human Interaction with, and human use of, computers and information technology.  
The title of the double-award winning paper is “Penan's Oroo's Short Message Signs (PO-SMS): Co-design of a Digital Jungle Sign Language Application”. Dr Tariq’s paper was co-written with Dr Heike Winschiers-Theophilus, who works with Polutechnic of Namibia.  
The paper was written based on Dr Zaman’s research on community-based co-design process of an innovative communication tool, as designed in collaboration with an indigenous community, the Penans of Long Lamai, aiming at reviving a traditional sign language.
The theme of INTERACT 2015 was Connection.Tradition.Innovation” and it was among the world's top conferences in Human-Computer Interaction. The first INTERACT conference was held in 1990, and this conference series has been organised under the aegis of the Technical Committee 13 on Human-Computer Interaction of the UNESCO International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). 
This committee aims at developing the science and technology of the interaction between humans and computing devices.  
At UNIMAS, Dr Tariq works at the Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovations (ISITI-CRI) and his primary research focus are directed towards understanding the social and cultural framework of indigenous and rural communities, Human-computer interaction, indigenous knowledge preservation and digitalization, as well as community-based co-designing of ICT's.  
His PhD supervisors are Prof Dr Narayanan Kulathuramaiyer and Prof Dr Alvin Yeo Wee, both senior lecturers at UNIMAS with vast experience in Rural Informatics and Knowledge Management. 
Their previous accolades include eBario, the first national ICT project which focused on exploring the potential of technology for remote rural communities in Sarawak.
