UNIMAS To Expand E-Bario in Rural Areas

KUCHING, July 7 (Bernama) -- Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), the prime-mover behind the award-winning E-Bario, a rural internet project aimed at bridging the digital divide for the Bario community in Miri, plans to go places.

It intends to expand the project to other remote areas in Sarawak and Sabah, as well.
They are Sarawak's Long Lama and Ba'kelalan, and Buayan and Tawau in Sabah.

Unimas Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) Dr Peter Songan said the ground work for the four areas had already begun.

He said the science, technology and innovation ministry had provided a RM4 million grant under the ministry's Demonstrator Application Grant Scheme to implement the projects.

Songan was speaking to reporters after the opening of the three-day, 6th International Conference on Technology in Asia 2009 by Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan here today.

For Sabah, he said Unimas would work with Universiti Malaysia Sabah and a non-govermental organisation.
Initiated in April 1999, the E-Bario project was hailed as among the country's success stories in bridging the digital divide in rural communities.
