CAAS - a world-class product

KOTA SAMARAHAN: When the bright minds of local intellectuals come together, world-class products could materialize out of thin air.

This was what happened when UNIMAS and UiTM teamed up last year. The result was an award-winning 'Computer-Adaptive Assessment Software' (CAAS) which has won accolades at the international level.
UiTM Vice Chancellor, Tan Sri Professor Dr Ibrahim Abu Shah, remarked: "CAAS is our first university collaboration research project with UNIMAS and to be commercialised together. It is my greatest desire to see that the commercialisation effort for this product be aggressively undertaken by both our universities," Ibrahim said at UiTM-UNIMAS Joint Agreement Signing Ceremony held at UNIMAS here yesterday.

UNIMAS Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid, said CAAS came about following a dissertation undertaken by UiTM lecturer and UNIMAS doctorate student Lau Sie Hoe.

"His research and thesis led to the discovery of a new scoring method entitled the Number Right Elimination Testing Scoring Method (NRET). Patent application for this new discovery has been submitted to the Malaysian Patent Office and is 100% owned by UNIMAS," he said.

The project was funded by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) with a grant of RM122,500.

The software has won numerous awards, namely IID Competition, Shah Alam 2008 (Gold), ITEX, KL (Gold) and Special ARCA Award from Croatia and Seoul International Fair 2008 (Silver).

NRET is a new scoring method for multiple-choice items. It is able to reduce guessing and credit partial knowledge which are the main weaknesses of most commonly used Number Right (NR) scoring method.
Thus, it gives more valid assessment of students' knowledge level. In addition, NRET scoring improves the psychometric qualities of the test because it is able to extract useful diagnostic information on students' knowledge state.

It has the potential to be widely accepted to replace NR scoring since it is simple and practical in normal educational setting.

The software is designed for three types of users; administrators, teachers and students. Currently, the software contains 13 chapters of Form Two Mathematics. However, it can be extended to cover other subjects.

It has been tested in 40 schools in Sarawak from April to November 2008 and has received positive responses from both students and teachers.
