10 People Recognised For Contributions To Nation In Conjunction With Malaysia Day

KUCHING, Oct 11 (Bernama) -- In conjunction with the Malaysia Day celebration, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak presented certificates and mementos to 10 people in recognition of their contributions to the nation, at Padang Merdeka here Saturday night.

Of the 10, four were from Peninsular Malaysia and three each from Sabah and Sarawak.

The personalities from Peninsular Malaysia were historian Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Datuk Dr Khoo Kay Kim, Yayasan Karyawan chief executive Datuk Dr Hassan Ahamd, Unversiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Social Sciences Faculty deputy dean Dr Sivamurugan Pandian and National Sports Council Athletes Affairs director Zaiton Othman.

The Sarawak personalities recognised were Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Bujang Mohamed Nor, former assemblyman and Member of Parliament for Serian, Datuk Seri Dominic Dagok Randen and the first woman to be appointed to the Sarawak State Council, Datuk Seri Tra Zehnder @ Philomena Tra Jemat.

As for Sabah, they were Pertubuhan Islam Seluruh Sabah (USIA) president, Tan Sri Datuk Ampung Puyon; the first Sabahan to be appointed to the Malaysian Education Commission, Datuk Abdul Malik Jangkat and Sabah Chinese Association secretary-general, Datuk Pang Tet Tshung.

When met, Dominic Dagok said he was pleasantly suprised to be honoured for the role he played in the formation of Malaysia and thanked the government for the recognition.

Abdul Malik, the only Sabahan to be picked to join the delegation headed by former prime minister, the late Datuk Abdul Razak Hussain on his visit to Commonwealth countries to explain the formation of Malaysia, said he was deeply touched to be honoured as such.

Sabah and Sarawak joined the Federation of Malaysia on Sept 16 1963 to form Malaysia.

Meanhwile, Zaiton, who was dubbed "Bionic Woman" for her athletic prowess in her heyday, said the recognition served as inspiration to her to further promote the cause of sport in the country.

"Sports is a unifying factor in line with the 1Malaysia concept espoused by the Prime Minister," she said.
