Scholarships offered in memory of lost son

on 05 Februari 2010.

KUCHING: A South Korean university professor has offered 10 scholarships for under-privileged students at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) in memory of his son who drowned here in early January.

Prof Jeung Kaekyu, who specialises in history, and his wife came to Sarawak recently to find out about the last few days of their son Jeong Yohan.

Yohan, 24, and his friend Kim Seong Hyun, 20, perished in an attempt to save a female friend who encountered problems while swimming at a beach resort here.

Noble gesture: Prof Jeung (right) handing over the Jeung Yohan Foundation scholarships to a representative of Unimas in Kuching recently.
They were part of a group of South Korean students on a missionary trip here.

Rescuers comprising resort guests, Civil Defence personnel and life savers on duty managed to save the female student but could not revive Yohan and Kim.

Prof Jeung expressed gratitude to those who had assisted in the search-and-rescue efforts during the incident.

To honour his late son, Jeung offered the scholarships to Unimas under the Jeung Yohan Foundation.

The recipients will be selected by Unimas with the condition that they are from poor and under-privileged backgrounds.

In an unrelated event, Prof Jeung donated RM100,000 to St Thomas Church here.
