First batch of council volunteers completes workshop

on 10 Februari 2010.

Known as Kenyalang 2010, the three-day workshop was organised by Unimas Student Affairs Department and Alumni in collaboration with Maksum and  the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE).

Those public universities participating in the workshop were Unimas, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Samarahan, Kuching Polytechnic  and Kuching Community College.

Maksum chairman Prof Wan Mahzom Ahmad Shah, who officiated at the closing ceremony, said Maksum was formed to provide opportunity for students to gain exposure regarding issues on education, environment and social issues.

He said Maksum is an education-based secretariat that provides services to the community in need.

“This workshop is done in tandem with MOHE’s plan to produce progressive and dynamic students that are in touch with local issues.

“It is hoped that through the programmes and activities, students will have the skills in a challenging environment and these will contribute to their maturity besides serving the community,” he said.

According to him, the intensive and comprehensive training programme must be executed in a workshop in order to fulfill the nation’s need to produce volunteers that are well versed in various fields.

“An effective volunteer’s activity can be achieved through collaborations with non-governmental agencies (NGOs) with activities similar to INSAF and Aman Malaysia,” he said.

He urged participants to make full use of activities such as the workshop to inculcate character building, friendship and community as well as nation building for the sake of the county’s harmony.

Besides that, he said that he hoped such workshop would be able to promote environmental awareness amongst students.

Also present at the event were Unimas deputy vice- chancellor Prof Madya Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman.
