More males needed in nursing profession: Fatimah

on 10 Februari 2010.

She said a balanced gender ratio in any profession is essential for the development and advancement of a profession since both females and males are playing a complementary role.

Fatimah pointed out the involvement of more males in the nursing profession would help the nation to achieve the ratio of one staff nurse to 200 population by 2020.

“We are informed by the Ministry of Health that by 2020 we require 174,000 nurses. Currently, there are only 75,000 registered nurses in public and private sectors. Malaysia is keen to achieve the norm of one staff nurse to 200 persons by the year 2020.

“I have learnt that the gender ratio for Unimas (Universiti Malaysia Sarawak) nursing students is one male to eight females. It is a good start. Hopefully, more males would go into this profession,” she said  at the opening of First Unimas Nursing Students Conference 2010 held at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) at Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce here, yesterday.

Nevertheless, Fatimah, who is also Assistant Minister of Women Development, stressed that quantity should come with quality.

Nursing is a noble profession which would have tremendous impact on human lives, she said, adding that it could mean life or death. Hence, the selection of nursing candidates must be done stringently and with great care, she added.

“Candidates chosen must not only be qualified academically but also have the right attitude and aptitude. After undergoing compulsory training and after being emplaced, equally important is for those who are in the profession to practise lifelong learning, networking and sharing of information, knowledge and experience,” said the assistant minister .

She advised nurses to always update and upgrade themselves with knowledge and skills so that it could be integrated into practices for best quality and care to patients.

“Sharing is vital in nursing profession as sharing means caring. And caring is the fundamental and core business of nursing,” she reiterated.

Also present at the opening were State Health director Dr Zulkifri Jantan, Unimas vice chancellor Professor Dr Khairuddin Ab Hamid, deputy vice chancellor (student affairs and alumni) Associate Professor Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman, FMHS dean Tan Sri Datu Professor Dr Mohamad Taha Arif, FMHS head of Nursing Department Jane Buncuan and organising chairwoman Frannelya Francis.

The one-day conference was organised by the fourth and final year nursing students of Unimas.

With the objective to gather nursing students from different institutions in the state, the conference was also to enable them to share their knowledge and experience in clinical settings besides  providing a platform to network.

Participants of the conference included nursing students from Unimas, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Health and Allied Science College (KSKB), College of Nursing Serian, College of Nursing Sibu, Masterskill, International College and Advanced Technology Systems (ICATS), Segi College and i-System College.
