Number of Facebook users exceeds US population

on 19 Mac 2010.

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Facebook has been described as the ‘third largest nation’ on earth with the number of users around the world estimated at 350 million. US is the third largest nation in terms of population after China and India, and should one treat Facebook as a single country, it could easily beat US, said an expert in World Wide Web technology, Bebo White yesterday.

This online social network is fast becoming the most powerful social interaction tool in the world, he pointed out.

White said Facebook was an example of how the online social network had become a powerful social interaction tool.

“What Facebook and other types of online social networks provide for users is beyond the advancement in technology as it includes psychological and sociological aspects,” he said.

This was the reason so many people were willing to share their private or semi-private information online, White said at a ‘Future Web Workshop 2010’.

The two-day workshop ending today is organised by the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) here.

It aims to expose participants to current and future trends of the Web.

White, one of the invited speakers at the workshop, is a departmental associate at the Standard Linear Accelerator Centre (SLAC) in Standard University in the US.

He questioned social network providers for imposing limitations on resource-sharing across networks. He described the situation as ‘The Walled Garden’ where it might be easy for users to manage their particulars within the same network but not share information between networks.

“However, there is an increased tendency for social network providers to adopt an ‘Open ID’ approach,” he said, adding that such open and standardised social networks would benefit users.
