Government To Upgrade Laila Taib College By 2012

on 07 Mei 2010.

SIBU, May 6 (Bernama) -- In an effort to produce more quality human capital in the future, the government hopes to upgrade the Laila Taib College (KLT), here, by 2012.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the ministry will help the college to obtain recognition from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).

"Providing the country with higher learning institutions is costly. Many people can talk but only the Barisan Nasional (BN) led government can create a community-based and non-profit college to transform the lives of Sibu residents.

"Upgrading KLT to a university college will produce more manpower to fill up vacancies offered by the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (Score)," he told reporters after visiting the KLT here.

The college, which was established in 1997 and was known as the United College Sarawak (UCS) then, was taken over by the Sarawak Foundation and renamed Laila Taib College after Chief Minister Tan sri Abdul Taib Mahmud's late wife, Datuk Amar Laila Taib for her contribution towards education in the state.

KLT has managed to produce 4,000 graduates to date and offers diploma courses in architecture, civil engineering, quantity surveying, business management and engineering.

Meanwhile, Khaled also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between KLT, which was represented by its Chief Executive Officer Wong Kee Yew and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) was represented by its Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid.

Prof Dr Khairuddin said the five-year MoU aimed to encourage KLT diploma graduates to pursue their degrees in UNIMAS.
