THE use and disposal of cooking oil has become a cause for concern for the Environment and Public Health Ministry in its bid to protect people’s health and the environment.

The ministry’s permanent secretary Dr Penguang Manggil said his office was conducting a survey on what happened to used cooking oil at eateries.

“We don’t know if restaurateurs and fast food joints re-use their oil time or dispose of it and where they dispose it and want to make sure what they do,” he told reporters after launching a seminar on solid waste management at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) in Kota Samarahan yesterday.

He said, aside from conducting studies at major towns in Sarawak, the ministry had found a company interested in treating used cooking oil.

In addition, the ministry was creating awareness on where people could dispose of e-waste, including batteries, he added.

Earlier, Unimas vice-chancellor Professor Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid said the university was aggressively pursuing proper waste management and had come up with a pilot plant to treat waste at the campus.

“We hope to become a role model for other campuses interested in going green. Unimas hopes the plant will be functional in two years and provide research data for the university’s partners,” he said.

Dr Khairuddin said that Unimas was committed to assisting in research on latest green technologies and providing the necessary data.
