Individuals must dream of being successful entrepreneurs instead of being wage earners, says Taib

on 13 Oktober 2010.

CHIEF minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud says the country needs positive and innovative citizens in order to progress.

“They must not only think of commercialising our abundant natural resources but also their ideas, globally,” he said during the 14th Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) Convocation in Kota Samarahan.

Taib, also the pro-chancellor of Unimas, said these individuals must dream of being successful entrepreneurs instead of being salaried employees as Malaysia heads towards Vision 2020.

In this regard, Taib said the role of the university was therefore immense in churning out graduates with entrepreneurial skills, innovative, confident and unselfish to create a global economy based on knowledge, adding that it was important for graduates to adopt a lifelong learning mentality as knowledge and technology kept changing.

Joy: Frannelya in a jovial mood with her family after receiving the Chancellor’s Award.

“As the generation of Google and Facebook, you must be aware of the changes that are rapidly taking place and as progressive individuals, you must be proactive, dare to try and be able to have positive and innovative imaginations.”

Earlier, Unimas vice-chancellor Prof Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid said it was the responsibility of a university to create individuals who could contribute to nation building.

“It is with this that Unimas tries to involve our undergraduates to have logical thinking, be pragmatic and ethical to make them creative and innovative.”

The third and fourth sessions of the convocation yesterday saw 753 graduates out of 1,765 receiving their scrolls.

Meanwhile, it was the proudest moment of Frannelya Francis’ life when she bagged the Chancellor’s Award.

The 23-year-old from Kapit, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nursing, excelled not only academically but also in extra-curricular activities during her three years in Unimas. She was also an executive committee member of public and international relations in Unimas Students Council.

Currently working as a clinical technician with a private specialist centre in Kuching, she has received an offer to work for National University of Singapore Hospital.

“I must extend my sincere gratitude to both my parents for their sacrifices, not forgetting my lecturers who were there to guide me during my studies. I also appreciate all my friends who were there for me and it is their friendship and encouragement that has made it possible for me to receive the award,” she beamed.

Frannelya, who represented the graduates in delivering a speech at the convocation, said they would make full use of the knowledge gained in their working life.

“We will make sure that what we have learnt would not go to waste and we will apply it in our everyday life.”

Frannelya added that the graduates had so much to gain while studying in the university which had enlightened them on the meaning of tolerance and understanding.
