A First For UNIMAS

on 15 Oktober 2010.

University successfully organises IPGE at its Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

THE Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) has created a major milestone in its history when it successfully organised the first International Post Graduate Examination (IPGE) at its Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in August this year.

The IPGE was the Part 3 or the final component of the Intercollegiate Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (IMRCS) UK Examination conducted in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK.

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is one of the oldest surgical colleges in the world with a very high professional reputation and standard.

A local convener and chief examiner Professor Dr Khin Tun, who is the FMHS Surgery Department head together with his overseas counterpart Professor R C Mason of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK headed the Examination Team comprising six local examiners from Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and Unimas together with six visiting examiners from UK.

Forty-seven candidates including 30 from all Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, Myanmar, Singapore, and Saudi Arabia, 12 from Peninsular Malaysia and five from Sabah and Sarawak sat for the examination.

With the blessing, encouragement, support and advice from the Unimas Chancellery and the Dean of the Faculty, the first MRCS examination of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has been successfully conducted at a very high professional standard.

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK has complimented FMHS as one of the best in the world and the examination as one of the most successful examination held overseas.

This is the first ever international post graduate examination in the history of Unimas and it has improved the image and the role of the university in the international arena of surgical education. It also became an incentive to Unimas’s medical students wishing to take up surgery as their future professional career.

For the local young surgical trainees, they now have the opportunity to sit for this examination in their own environment without needing to go to UK or other overseas centres thus saving a lot of time , money and stress.
