Gabem chief advises Bumis to take business seriously

on 20 Oktober 2010.

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Bumiputeras were advised not to enter the business world at ‘half strides' if they wanted to be among the top in the economic league.

Gagasan Badan Ekonomi Masyarakat Bumiputera (Gabem) chairman Tan Sri Rahim Tamby Chik yesterday said that Bumiputeras had wasted a lot of opportunities by not taking business seriously.

Rahim added that they were also easily persuaded and enticed to pass up the opportunity to others.

“They like to have joint ventures where they're made to be sleeping partners. They just sit quietly and receive easy allowances.

“On the other hand, the important decision making and strategic planning positions are given to others,” he said in his speech at the opening of ‘Patriotism Consolidation of Bumiputera Economy in Public Institutions of Higher Learning' programme held at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).

According to Rahim, the Bumiputeras undergo a change of attitude and approach in doing business.

“To be successful in business, we must be trustworthy, disciplined and professional. Those with these qualities will be very successful.

“But if we conduct business half-heartedly, ‘main-main' with no commitment and dedication, we will not be able to push our rankings to be at the top of the nation's economy,” he added.

According to Rahim, 65 per cent of Malaysia's population are Bumiputeras and only 19 per cent are in the top rankings of the nation's economy.

The programme was organised by Gabem and Majlis Kepimpinan Latihan Universiti Malaysia (Maklum) with assistance from public universities throughout the country.

Its objective was to provide an understanding and awareness of the importance of developing Bumiputera economy.

Participants were given information on funding for businesses provided by the government and job opportunities.

Unimas deputy vice chancellor Assoc Prof Mohd Fadzil Abd Rahman, Gabem Business Academy of Excellence (Gabex) general manager Datuk Jasmil Ghani, Gabem director Sahlan Saruddin and Maklum chairman Prof Dr Mohd Fauzi Ramlan were also present at the event.
