on 26 Oktober 2010.

Kota Kinabalu: The Government of Japan extended grant assistance totalling RM172,190.93 to the Project for Electrification by Solar Energy on the island off the East Coast of Sabah in March 2010.

The grant was used for establishing the electrification system by solar energy in the community hall on Pulau Larapan near Semporna, to improve the living conditions of the people in the island.

The project was implemented by the Centre of Excellence for Rural Informatics (CoERI), Universitie Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) as its e-Larapan project.

According to a statement from the Consulate-General of Japan, the project was completed recently and handed over at the launching of Paglatunan e-Larapan in Pulau Larapan on Oct 16.

It was witnessed by Consul-General of Japan for Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan Kazuyoshi Yamaguchi. Unimas Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Peter Songan was also present.

The Government of Japan extends financial assistance to the development projects designed to meet the diverse needs of the people in developing countries through the scheme of grant assistance.

Known as the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), the scheme supports the projects proposed by non-governmental organisations (NGOs), local governments, hospitals, primary schools and other non-profit associations.

The GGP has acquired an excellent reputation for providing flexible and timely support to development projects at the grassroots level.

Since 1989, under the GGP, the Government of Japan has extended the assistance in Sabah and Sarawak with 37 small but socially and economically important projects amounting to approximately RM5 million in total.

The Government of Japan is always responsive to the good proposals from NGOs and other non-profit associations to carry out the projects under the GGP.
