UNIMAS to incorporate green concept in student pavillion

on 03 Januari 2011.

UNIVERSITI Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) is constructing a student pavillion in a bid to win the Platinum for energy efficiency in Malaysia's Green Building Index award.

The government had recently announced that all new government buildings would be “green” and if possible, retrofitting would also be done for existing ones.

“Our Prime Minister has already offered to cut our energy intensity by 40% by 2020 at the last UNFCCC meeting in Copenhagen.

“The reduction of the carbon intensity equivalent of 1.1mil tonne is expected.

“That alone speaks volumes about our serious intention on adoption and adaption of renewabla energy and green technology,” said Unimas vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid during a memorandum of understanding (MoU) ceremony in Kuching yesterday.

The MoU between Unimas' Centre of Research Excellence for Renewable Energy (Coere) and the Centre of Renewable Energy (CRE), Quaid E-Awam University of Engineering, Science and Technology (Quest) was signed on between Khairuddin and Quest vice-chancellor Prof Dr Ali Bux Soomro.

“Renewable energy in Pakistan is not yet fully researched and exposed.

“I hope with this collaboration, it will see Pakistan and Malaysia exchange knowledge in green technologies,” said Ali.

The MoU is for the two centres to collaborate in the development of research projects, organisation of joint academic and scientific activities, placement of researchers, exchanges of publications and other materials of common interest as well as any other area of co-operation.

Unimas' Coere was founded in 2009 with the objective to be the leading centre of excellence for renewable energy research and education in Malaysia, carrying a mission to establish a conducive and multi-disciplinary research environment within researchers and scientists by focusing on research and development, commercialisation of marketable renewable energy technologies, and provision of solutions to community and environmental issues.
