Experts capable of evaluating all aspects of water engineering

on 22 Ogos 2011.

KUCHING: University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) believes it can assist the government in widening coverage of safe drinking water and electricity in rural Sarawak.

Its vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid said Unimas civil engineering department and environmental research group was dedicated to carrying out water research and providing education and policy for sustainability.

He said Unimas had experts in hydrology and hydraulics, environment impact assessment (EIA), water and wastewater treatment technologies and solid waste management.

He said the university’s experts were capable of evaluating all aspects of water engineering for the state.

“Our experts have completed numerous research work related to the area, including securing international- and national-level funds.

“Several patents have also been registered, and some of them have gained local and international recognitions,” he said at the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Unimas and EPC Synergy Sdn Bhd here Wednesday evening.

Khairuddin said Unimas was well aware of the unique and challenging condition in Sarawak and it shared the Federal Government’s aspiration to increase safe drinking water coverage throughout the country, particularly in Sarawak.

“With regard to this, I believe Unimas can assist in many ways,” he said.

He added that the university’s Faculty of Engineering members, through the university’s Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy (CoERE), had been actively involved in micro projects, bringing electricity to the rural community who were not connected to the state power grid.

He said among the projects secured by the group were in Semulong Ulu in Lingga, Sri Aman and Nanga Sengaih in Julau.

“We are expecting many more projects being carried out by the Centre,” he said.
