Unimas and EPC Synergy aim to give rural folk clean water and sanitation

on 22 Ogos 2011.

KUCHING: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) will join forces with EPC Synergy Sdn Bhd in developing clean, safe drinking water and good sanitation in the rural areas.

Looked upon as an innovative engineering collaboration, the joint effort will see inventions to provide clean water with sustainable elements, particularly in areas where potable water and electricity supply are not available or lacking.

Both parties had signed the memorandum of understanding (MOU) to mark their alliance.

The MoU will enable members from Unimas’s Faculty of Enginee-ring together with EPC Synergy Sdn Bhd to explore potential research and consultancy projects in areas where water supply is not available.

The team from Unimas will comprise experts in hydrology, water resources engineering, wastewater treatment and micro-hydro.

The team’s research outputs and products, some with registered patents, have gained recognition locally and abroad.

Speaking at the signing ceremony on Wednesday evening, Unimas vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Ad Hamid said he was confident that the alliance would help meet the aspirations of the Rural and Regional Develop- ment Ministry to increase water supply coverage throughout Malaysia.

He said this collaboration was also an initiative to supplement and support the establishment of Green Energy Island, which is an ongoing agenda for the Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry.

EPC Synergy executive director Azman Bujang said the partnership represented a major milestone for his company in pursuing its corporate diversification plan of venturing into the green technology projects.

He believed that both parties would benefit from the collaboration.

EPC Synergy is an engineering firm registered with PKK Class A (for works), Class I (for electrical), Petronas Dagangan Berhad in oil and gas, ISO 9001 certified company and CIDB G7.

The company, based in Kuching and with a branch office in Kuala Lumpur, has a paid-up capital of RM1mil. It has undertaken projects valued at RM150mil.
