KUCHING: The Centre for Technology Transer and Consultancy (CTTC), the business arm of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), introduced its newly re-designed corporate video yesterday.

Through this video, CTTC is announcing to the business world that it is prepared to serve and make its mark in the corporate domain.

Deputy vice-chancellor (research and innovation) Prof Dr Peter Songan stated that in addition to the existing tasks of CTTC, which includes providing consultancy services, protection of Unimas intellectual property rights, commercialising Unimas own research products and providing technology transfer to the industrial sector, CTTC is now given the responsibility of providing lifelong learning opportunities to all.

“In line with the National policy, Unimas has adopted its own lifelong learning policy in May this year. Under this policy, CTTC and Unimas Holding Sdn Bhd will work together in developing and conducting short courses to the general public, to individual industries, private and public agencies as well as for Unimas internal use,” he said when launching the CTTC’s corporate video and website staff lounge, University House at Unimas Thursday.

So far, CTTC has conducted several short courses including ‘Introduction to Japanese Business Culture’, ‘Interdependence of Research, Innovation and Commercialisation’, ‘Financial Management for Bumiputera Contractors’, ‘Training the Trainers on Environmental Awareness and Conservation’ and ‘Strategic Planning Workshops’.

Peter also announced that next challenge to CTTC was to make Unimas a hub for lifelong learning in Borneo and in Southeast Asia in the future.

He also informed that CTTC is now in discussion with Open University Malaysia (OUM) to find a winning formula in synergising efforts to provide better access and quality courses to the public.

“Such network is vital for sustaining our business in this modern age,” he added.

Since its restructuring and rebranding, CTTC has achieved some noticeable successes in its intellectual properties protection and commercialisation efforts.

The introduction of an innovation team in developing products and bringing them to the marketplace is one of the new ideas currently implemented at CTTC.

According to the director of CTTC, Prof Dr Lau Seng, staff members of the centre share a vision to transform Unimas’ expertise into economic commodities that will prosper the country.

This vision has inspired them to give their best in providing an ecosystem conducive for research, innovation and commercialisation activities in the university.

He further said CTTC served as gateway for industries to come to Unimas in search of expert services to solve their problems.

This gateway, in turn, enables the staff to keep abreast with current needs.

Eventually, the centre hopes to create an active network between the industrial players, particularly those in the state and Unimas researchers.

“As a start, CTTC has made several industrial visits to organisations in Kuala Lumpur, Shah Alam and Miri. More visits will be made to industries in Bintulu, Kuching and Penang. Through such visits, the centre will be able to identify the need of industrial sectors in Malaysia, and accordingly provide solutions to meet those needs.
